As for Pran standing up to his parents, you can obviously see how Pran's mother was far worse than Pat's. Pat's father wasn't enraged upon seeing Pat with Pran or Pat wanting to see Pran. This is clearly not the case with Pran's mom.
I think their personalities also play an important role. Pran is introverted and tends to overthink a lot. He would always consider the consequences of his actions. That is why his actions seem frustrating to some which is clearly not the case.
Pran in the novel is diagnosed with OCD tendencies after being separated from Pat. It leads him to have distressing thoughts from time to time. He used to visit a psychiatrist too, if I remember correctly. I don't know as to what Pran's mom did to cause that kind of trauma.
