How is the drama doing in china? Do you guys think it will be popular?
The drama is very popular but I’ve noticed two main points of criticism in many forums. One is from a section of viewers who are very unhappy with the ML criticizing his looks and acting (This shocked me coz I wonder what's their yardstick for good looking??? There is narrative that the SML playing Chu zhao & FL's villain brother are better looking than ML. I don't get it coz cheng lei is very good looking for me. But his acting is indeed average or below average, so that I can accept coz I feel he is just too stiff).
The other is from novel readers who are disappointed with the details of adaptation which we have seen here as well. However, speaking purely from a drama-only perspective, it's indeed extremely popular. It was a very anticipated drama & having Zhou ye as FL is also hard carrying the popularity tbh.
Question again for novel readers to understand Chu zhao charaacter better.
So, I have read that the situation leading to the ML and FL receiving the marriage decree from the emperor happens because of a scheme by Chu Zhao. He already knew the FL’s identity and used her disguise as a man to trap the ML in front of the emperor. However, since the ML & FL already had feelings for each other by then , the ML introduced the FL as his fiancee which resulted in the marriage decree. (This is the general gist I gathered from various forums with input from novel readers, so please correct me if I am wrong.)
Now my question is, from the recent episodes and upcoming trailers, it is clear that Chu Zhao has started liking the FL & showing interest in her. So why would he still decide to use her as a pawn to trap the ML & potentially putting her life at risk? Does this mean he never liked her romantically at all or were his motives simply more important to him than his feelings for the FL? Could someone clarify this from the novel’s perspective? Thank you.
I am a bit confused by the airing schedule.. I can get that it's two episodes per day but they don't drop at the same time? Is it something to do with premium users who get to see the episode earlier? It would be nice if anyone help me understand it a bit. cheers
The character 'Chu Zhao' is described somewhat as a nice guy in the description here. But I don't get that vibe…
Got it, thank you :) I was mainly curious if he starts his bonding with FL with a hidden agenda & then later it becomes genuine . I guess that’s how it is?

Great, thanks. I was wondering if he will get close to FL for his own agenda instead of it being a genuine relationship from get go. Looks like that will be the case. Got it.
The character 'Chu Zhao' is described somewhat as a nice guy in the description here. But I don't get that vibe so far. Although it seems he has a traumatic past... without spoiling too much... Is he really a nice guy or a bad apple pretending to be nice to the FL & eventually falling for her in process?
Wow, just seen the teaser for EP9, I am feeling this show is gonna pick up pace from then. I guess we all should…
Looks like it. I think it will be more enjoyable from ep9 coz I think ML will confront her about her being a female & knows she can be a ruthless soldier with the way she slashed that guy. The cat is out of the bag. So it will be way better than it is now. I cannot wait
Just seen ep9 trailer & guys, frankly I think this is where the show will pick up pace. The stunts look way cooler + she has already begun her revenge arc & the truth seems to be already out between the leads (about her being a female + her being a ruthless soldier the way she slashed that dude). It looks way friggin cool & now got me pumped for next episodes. For anyone disappointed on technicalities so far, I’d say wait it out till ep9 at least coz now I am way more interested to see how we get there as it's getting pretty intense
I think for the stunt choreography we should remember that currently she's physically weak + no real chances to…
On a second thought, I think maybe you are right coz I have just seen the trailers for next episodes & ep 9 looks pretty awesome regarding her stunts. Now I am way more interested.. Maybe people should just wait for few more episodes
Some stan culture folks act like any criticism of their fav shows is like blasphemy & act like a cult but…

Irl He Yan would have a crazy tan line cuz of the mask LOL
Hate to kill the joke but her battlefield mask covers her whole face tho. The pretty feminine mask only comes out at home mostly indoors.. So not much risk of a tan at all ;)

Maybe but I don't think that was the intention tbh. Her stunts were clearly meant to show she was a level above the rest. If that was the goal, the execution should’ve been sharper is what I feel.. like more impactful and visually striking instead of coming off as lowbudgety feels??. Just my take though. Totally fine if you see it differently
bruuuh i still believe that the budget was cut due to the face swapping 🥲
Could very well be the case I guess. All that post production costs probably went here sadly & the end result wasn't even good.. But they had to release this somehow so I get them as well. One dude ruined it all for such a hyped show :/
Some stan culture folks act like any criticism of their fav shows is like blasphemy & act like a cult but idgaf coz this forum is to discuss the damn show.. so here’s MY honest thoughts after 4 episodes.
Let me be real here... Zhou Ye is the only one carrying the show so far. Her acting is the single redeeming factor for me yet. I’m choosing to overlook the rushed storytelling for now assuming it’s just the setup phase for grand storytelling later (Hopefully?). So it’s too early to fully criticize the narrative.
That being said, the cinematography? Awful. The stunt choreography is okayish but should’ve been way better esp since it’s completely centered around her being this badass general. The graphics? Also awful. And don’t even get me started on the AI face-swapping...it’s beyond awful🤦
Despite all those flaws, Zhou Ye still manages to keep you engaged. So one have to admit, she’s a genuinely incredible actress. The way she switches between the serious & funny one was so captivating for me 👏 . She proved within 4 episodes she was a great pick for a story that's centered around the FL. As for Cheng lei though, I am sorry, his acting has been just 'Ok' so far atleast for me. It's like they just just airdropped 'Gong Shang Jue' from 'My journey to you' here. Nothing different to notice but it's still early to complain. I also have sympathies coz this show has been through a lot after it has been finished. Obviously the aftereffects are meant to be seen. So fair enough here.
And finally, GUYS GUYS, No adaptation will ever please every novel reader. Their critiques are fair coz they just want to see what they imagined brought to life. But with all the usual issues like budget, scandals, time constraints, censorship etc, it’s always going to be impossible to bring the novel to life exactly but that doesn't mean they cannot express their displeasure here. So chill with all those sanctimonious pitchforks & cult tantrums just because someone dares to say something critical. Peace out.
