It was her mission, but not many can do it whole heartedly. Many have protected him because it’s their duties: his nannies (2 of them), XL, etc. but no one really show him respects and actually caring for him for real. When it’s between their lives and his, they will always pick themselves over his (in the book, it said it’s quite common that people will pick to live a few days extra rather than be calculating and try to live a few year or a life time longer, in the extra chapters). And we as the audience knows she “can’t die” (because 1- she’s the FL, and 2 - later on she’s revived/being a phoenix), but she didn’t know that. She would throw herself in front of him regardless of herself, and if she isn’t alive, who would then be there to guarantee he wouldn’t turn evil. It feels weird in 35 when he find out, even to me, who read the book at least twice, but if I stop and think, I can understand why. He has 500 years to mellow down and take things in, and looking at things not just for what it is, but what it truly means. The humanity and respect she shows him, and keep in mind, everything she said to him, a lot of it is true: she was happy to lock himself up in a room with her for her entire life if that means he won’t turn evil lol. N she was truly caring and loving him as much as she could allow herself, there wasn’t any fake in the things she do for him
