Five Stars

In this episode, we finally know the complete truth about Da-hae’s past and teases Gwi-ju’s involvement in the same. Although, the episode leaves the truth about Da-hae’s saviour a mystery, we could assume from the predictability and straightforward nature of the plot that it’s highly possible for him to be Da-hae’s saviour. Through his superpower, he might just be able to save someone from the past. This is especially important for Gwi-ju since he had travelled to the same memory when the car accident took place. For him to achieve a semblance of solace, he is frantically holding on to the threads that would justify his travel and subsequent loss on the fateful day.Although the plot remains interesting, the connection between Gwi-ju and Da-hae keep feeling forced, perhaps due to the fact that it is supposed to be forced in the episode with Da-hae’s cunning advances to trap the Bok family and Gwi-ju’s reluctance for the same. Moreover, now that Da-hae knows about I-na’s superpower, the show seems to become even more exciting. Consequently, I-na’s mind reading is the greatest threat to her plan and it’s only a matter of time to discover how it would take its course in the show.

Well, episode 4 of The Atypical Family was…

Well, episode 4 of The Atypical Family was the best until now! It’s great to see such an interesting plot back on track. Now, that we have more information on Da-hae’s past and her relationship with Il-hong and the others, the plot has suddenly taken a turn for the better. We also have a background on Bok family’s powers and it seems, their powers are inherited from a long chain of historical ancestors.Even though the origin of their powers is unknown, this little information greatly improves the setting of the show. Character motivations have also become way clearer than in the previous episodes, where we now understand why Man-heum has her suspicions about I-na’s parentage because it’s impossible for her to not have any powers. This suspicion might even be the basis where she thinks that Se-yeon’s second child is illegitimate as well. The highlight of this episode was hands down, the Gwi-ju’s time travels and how well they are placed in the episode, where all incidents from the past and the future connect in harmony. There are some unclear details though, for instance, how was he able to take the flowers from the present and give them to Da-hae in the future? How could nobody see the flowers until Da-hae held them?We have no clear answers and so, we can only suspend our belief regarding these little details since the show itself is quite entertaining at the moment. It is possible that we’d soon get an answer in the following episodes.Dong-hee’s character had a shining moment in this episode where her otherwise stereotypical character was portrayed in a good light. It might not be ideal but this is definitely a great beginning to her character development.Lastly, the last scene was a stroke of genius with Da-hae manipulating Gwi-ju’s situation to advance her plans. It is clearly in line with Man-heum’s comment that when others find out about Bok family’s powers, they either run away or take advantage of their powers. Since, Da-hae hasn’t run away, she’s definitely chosen the second path to follow.

I Will Gladly Die For You!

If that heart-fluttering scene when Sun-jae says he is willing to die for Im Sol and proceeds to kiss her didn’t make you want to start singing, “If this isn’t love, then tell me what is, “you need to go back and rewatch it. Out of all Sun-jae’s confessions, this has to be the best. As exciting as the kiss was, we have to worry about the future. Based on the last scene, we can only assume that Sun-jae didn’t become a singer. We can’t help but feel anxious about his future. Is he alive? What has he been up to?We have six chapters left and so far, Lovely Runner has continued to deliver in every aspect. The script is refreshing, and the new twists engage the viewers as they dissect the theories and try to guess what happens next. Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon have done an exemplary job bringing their characters to life, which is largely why this show is a hit. They have managed to hold their own as this is a challenging project. In each timeline, the characters drastically revolve, and it can’t be easy switching from a teenage to an adult role back and forth. However, the two have made it easy for viewers to understand and relate to the characters in each timeline. We also have to talk about the supporting cast, such as Seo Hye-won, who shines in her role as Hyun-joo. We will have to tune in next week to see what happens, but in the meantime, what are your theories?

The 2009 Incident

Lovely Runner does an excellent job of balancing the sad scenes with comedy. We started on a sad note with Sun-jae in a comma, but the trip scenes made us forget our heavy hearts. The show delivers unexpected heart-fluttering moments through impeccable execution. The Spiderman kiss and the accidental drunk kiss were good twists. We understand why Im Sol wants Sun-jae to stay away, but her approach only hurts him more. Sun-jae thinks she hates him, and the heartbroken look he gives her when she asks him to leave her alone only proves this. Now that he knows about her time-travelling adventure, will she come clean? Sadly, the trailer makes us think she will only push him further. Poor Sun-jae!If Young-soo is aware of the ongoing police investigation, it could indicate one of two possibilities: either there is a mole within the police force, or he has been keeping a close eye on Im Sol. Will she be able to prevent a disaster and rescue Sun-jae in the process?”

The Atypical Family is certainly intriguing,…

The Atypical Family is certainly intriguing, especially the plot, but at times in the episode, it seems like something is missing. Firstly, we have no clue about where the Bok family’s powers come from, what’s their source? Secondly, the plot pace feels a bit too rushed with Gwi-joo and Da-hae’s love story arc. It’s like we are skipping a lot of detail to rush to the point. We are also unsure if Da-hae’s scammer family is her real family or just a group of con artists. Although from the clues, the latter seems to be the case at present. There are also inconsistencies associated with the character motives and dialogue. For instance, in this episode, Gwi-joo mentions several times that he’s depressed and feels uncomfortable being set up with Da-hae. Later in the episode, he’s worried that he’d depend on her to look after I-na. This transition happens a bit too quickly since they’ve barely met each other enough. Moreover, somewhere in the middle of the episode, Gwi-joo appears at the gym only to declare that it took him a lot of energy to get to work as a depressed person and he immediately leaves for home. Such instances of forced appearances and inconsistent and badly written dialogues leave a weak aftertaste in an otherwise interesting plot. However, since we are only at episode 2, there’s much left to be unravelled.

The Day of The Accident

Lovely Runner continues to surprise us with new twists every day. In one moment, we thought Im Sol had travelled to the Joseon era. That would have been a fun yet horrible fate because we know she would most likely end up in the famous torture chair of the Joseon era.Episode 7 sees Im Sol change her fate and those of her loved ones. However, she is no longer close to Sun-jae, and we can’t help but wonder why. Im-gum touched on this at the hospital but didn’t explain. Why did Im Sol chase Sung-jae away? We also suspect that the watch transports Im Sol to the future every time she changes something in the past.Im Sol only has one chance left if she wants to change the future. Even though she is satisfied with the current reality, will something happen and force her to use the last chance? The nightmares might be a warning that danger is lurking on the corner. We have many questions, but we hope that the remaining nine episodes will answer them. We are mostly curious about how Grandma remembers both realities and what Tae-sung is up to.

Kim Ji-won Falls Into Park Sung-hoon’s Trap

As the penultimate episode, it does not carry the excitement compared to the previous episodes. It seems as though writers are desperately trying to tie all loose ends together – and they are not doing a great job of hiding it. The fact that Eun-sung continues to have an upper hand even in the penultimate episode is sort of ridiculous. We hope they end the series on a better note.Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Ji-won and Park Sung-hoon continue to deliver excellently with their expressions and dialogue, but that isn’t enough to compensate for the speedy story-telling in this episode

Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won Forge an Unbreakable Alliance

A power-packed episode! Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won display their stellar acting skills again and again. From their confessions to the way they fiercely protect each other. Even Hae-in’s family members were brilliant in the episode as they get protective of her after getting to know about her illness. Park Sung-hoon continues to shock us with his acting skills as Eun-sung is clearly spiralling to becoming a psychopath lover with his behaviour. His need to be with Hae-in is crossing all the lines and we hope he does not have a redemption arc because there isn’t anything that can save his character now.

No More Missed Chances

Excuse us while we scream from that last scene. It was like Sung-jae was confessing twice. We understand why Im Sol was so shocked. Imagine if your favourite idol confessed his feelings for you! What would be your reaction? Would you do it if he asked you to dump your “boyfriend” for him?We are only in episode 5, but we are getting confessions and kisses. This rom-com is delivering like Santa on Christmas. On a serious note though, what happens now? It turns out there was an even darker story behind Im Sol’s accident. Suddenly, the show is giving us crime thriller vibes. Will Im Sol recall these dark memories in time to save herself? Speaking of time, how much of it does she have left?We also gotta talk about Hyun-woo and Im Geum. It looks like Sung-jae’s handsome face will not be enough to save from the desires of her heart. She is going to get more whipped for Im Sol’s brother. This makes us wonder why they were not together in the future. What happened?

Timing

Lovely Runner is getting too good with these twists and cliffhangers. We didn’t see the time jump coming and were as shocked as Sung-jae. What does this mean? It is possible that the future Im-sol was only co-habiting in the past Im-sol’s body. When the sudden time slip happened, the future Im Sol returned to her time, and the past Im Sol remained infatuated with Tae-sung. That is the only theory we have for now. All we know is that Im Sol must return to save Sung-jae.It is interesting to think that all these events are happening in parallel worlds at the same time. To handle what is coming, Im Sol should first figure out how the timeslip works. On a light note, she must have been too drunk if she forgot that Sung-jae kiss. Who forgets their first kiss with their idol/ man of their dreams? It can never be

Sung-jae’s Secret Teen Crush

This episode was full of perfect comedy, and we loved it. After that sad debut episode, we had a light and fun second episode. The actors continue to wow us with their prowess. Kim Hye-yoon does a great job of making us believe the storyline. At the moment, she and Byeon Woo-seok are carrying the show. We also love seeing our favourite actors, such as Kim Won-hae, who plays Sung-jae’s dad. There is a saying that one can tell how good a show is based on the supporting cast, and Lovely Runner doesn’t disappoint. The twist at the end was a good surprise, especially to those who are yet to read the webtoon. Sung-jae has always had feelings for Im Sol. He also saved her from the accident, which means he knew who she was that night after the concert. We can’t help but theorise why he kept his distance from her after becoming an idol. It is possible he was scared to confess his feelings, and there is always the fear of how his fans will react. This show touches on the para-social relationship fans have with their favourite idols. The reality is their relationship might have been ill-received by the fans. Either way, we look forward to slowly uncovering the mystery of Sung-jae’s relationship with Im Sol.

After a year has passed, A-jeong and Ji-han…

After a year has passed, A-jeong and Ji-han finally meet in episode twelve. Do-han returns from the US for his art exhibit. Seung-A gets her father arrested and begins to work for charity. Chae-won finds love and has her happily ever after. Ji-han proposes marriage to A-jeong.The storyline of the show keeps up with its trend as there are plenty of twists and turns throughout this episode. By the end of the season, you find yourself empathizing with characters that you felt were quite unlikeable at the beginning of the season. For instance, Dae-ho, Seung-A, and even Do-han are all characters that you find yourself rooting for. The show is good at making its characters more nuanced. There is no denying the fact that the characters’ reasons for doing what they do have been weak from the beginning of the season to the very end. However, one can argue that logic isn’t a factor to judge a rom-com by. In any case, the show gives viewers exactly what they want: an enemies-to-lovers tale that has a happy ending. As a whole, the episode was interesting and entertaining; yet, to derive pleasure from it, you must refrain from taking it seriously. Considering that the end of the season resolves all of the lingering problems that were present throughout the season, the likelihood of there being a second season is extremely slim. Nevertheless, given the enormous amount of love and support that the show has gotten throughout the season, let us keep our fingers crossed for the best.

Four Stars

In episode eleven, Do-han opens up about his sexual orientation. A-jeong and Ji-han split up. Seung-A finds out that her father was the one who murdered her mother. Ji-han and Dae-ho have a heartfelt talk that helps Ji-han feel less guilty about what happened. At this point in time, the show is currently in the falling action phase. This episode is filled with a great deal of chaos, and the primary characters are forced to deal with challenges that leave them feeling heartbroken. At this juncture, the majority of the central characters are experiencing difficulties and are confronted with crisis. As the episode draws to a close, it becomes abundantly evident that the show is working towards bringing together the various loose ends. At this point, the dilemma of “will they, won’t they?” is more intense than ever before. As there is just one episode left, it will be intriguing to watch whether the enemies end up together or whether their love story is left unfinished.

Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won Experience New Feelings

This episode was an emotional rollercoaster! Thankfully, we got to see more of Hyun-woo and Hae-in being a real couple where they acknowledge their feelings and communicate. Their sweet scenes left a lasting impact on us as Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won’s chemistry bloomed even further! We also got to see more scenes of Hae-in interacting with her in-laws and we love it! Especially Hyun-woo’s mother who obviously dotes on Hae-in, it is heartwarming to see Hae-in experience the motherly love that she was deprived of for so many years. We hope to see more scenes of them together in the coming episodes, especially as Hae-in goes through more troubles with her ailment. Eun-sung’s backstory unravels slowly as we see that he was an orphan who had an interaction with the Chairman but there is more to it than it seems. We hope to see more of Eun-sung’s true intentions and backstory in the coming episodes.
