Its not just the name change, Legally adopting Kai is a very strong connection, As good as blood imo, you can rightfully say he's your kid which would also make Jerry feel much secure cos now he legally has Kai and Damien and i believe its also a validation of and education on same sex couple adoption which the parents need to recognize too. Just because its not your sperm nor egg doesn't invalidate you as a parent, You were there from inception, just because a surrogate was used or you adopted doesn't change that fact, and lets be honest Jerry has been more of a dad to Kai than Damien who's got the sperm has ever been. That being said, Damien for sure needs to be more supportive of Jerry and only a ring wont fix that, he needs to start acting right! He's gotten way too comfortable having Jerry fold to his demands, and Jerry standing up for himself is the character development we needed, cos my boy's let Damien have his way just too too much! Supporting his career and his interests and respecting his decisions are very important part of saying you love someone can't stay one sided!
Sadly shit like these happen in real life in relationships/marriages either Queer/Straight.
