Unfortunately the 40 episode cap affected TTEOTM. Story was originally meant to be told in 56 episodes. This meant a lot of scenes, character building etc, got cut in order for this drama to air as 40 episodes. We were lucky that it was allowed to air at all with all the backend censorship drama going on.
Totally get you if you are unable to move forward with episode 40, but it is in a way happy ending, albeit an open one. Youku could have definitely done better on that.
One of our residents, Micha, translated the final 5 chapters (Part 127 - 131) of the book which was the happy ending all of us wanted to see on screen. You can read it in the discussion thread above.
Youku did released the audio preview of the Aftermath, but still did not announced when it will be release
Ah yes, and the audio of the happy ending. It did help cheer some folks up. But I think in the end, most viewers would have preferred that scene in the drama itself. *sighs*

I think it was a hair accessory that propped the pony tail up, making it look like a high pony tail. So I guess after the river scene, he lost his hair accessory and his high pony tail could not be maintained and became a lower pony tail. LOL
Looks like back in ancient times, the guys had the same hair issues as us gals. Misplacing hair accessories should be something normal for the guys too? 🤣😂🤣😂😁

We would classify it as an open happy ending. The thing is that in the book, there was a proper happy ever after for the lead couple. In the show, Youku did not do a proper family reunion, merely hinted at it. It was vague and caused a lot of angst for all of us who watched it earlier on.
Yes, please prepare your tissues. A lot of tissues. 😅 Even though I have watched the drama already, I still bawled my eyes out when I went to rewatch just 1 episode, episode 40 for the extra minute added. The leads are brilliant in their acting, one cannot help but feel so deeply for their characters.

I also came across a video of him in TTEOTM costume, it was the black emperor outfit. The touch up was not well done, the outline of that bruise on the side of his mouth was big! Such a huge bruise, no wonder he could not eat! Gosh, my heart really ached for him. Poor baby, just want to hug him. That thug that hit him totally deserves punishment by lightning, never ending! And the director also needs some lightning bolts for not protecting Xixi.
