Usually in the novels, the characters are better explained and grow well on the reader because a book has no chapter or time limitations. But when translated into a drama, due to having fixed number and length of episodes, characters can sometimes be lost on the viewers depending on the direction from the director on how they want the character portrayed in the miserly 40 episodes. I think costume dramas need a decent 60 episodes to tell the story properly. 40 episodes means we get only the very key scenes. Did you know there was a back story about YQG and SYS in the novel which was not shown here?

I think the director was trying to show that RR is starting from zero but fans were hoping to see more of that kickass YQG personality. As RR has no memories of being YQG and being brought up in a normal human family, she is what we see as the current RR. And the contrast between YQG and RR is jarring and annoyed some fans. That seems to be the source of the many complaints. I don't feel that it is directed at Julia. More of frustration at the character development.

The SYS character is a continuation and easier to follow. We see him transition from a troubled, grumpy, brash young man who grew up into a stoic, grumpy, disciplined shifu. He also continues the trait of being willing to do the craziest things to save the one he loves.

I think it's just different POVs on characters. Which is good as there cannot be only 1 POV in a discussion board. Gets boring real fast. As long as everyone is respectful and separate the actors from the characters when criticizing it makes for interesting read/discussion.

I enjoyed this drama very much and loved the ending so much, it was just too cute. RR/YQG and XiaoShui are well matched. I love them both. And I expect #4 to pop by soon. LOL

It suddenly came to me...Xiao Lin's tribulation was none other than BITCHANG! URGH...just that one is tribulation enough. LOL

I think if LSS did not time travel, maybe she and Jiwu would be very happy together. Afterall, LSS is the level up version of YXW, not surprising if she still had the hots for XiaoLin. LOL Jiwu is the level up version of XiaoLin right?

But because she time travelled, LSS's "fate" with Jiwu got broken off and she is now entangled with TTJ.
