I think he did/does have amnesia, but it is slowly coming back, with the small flashbacks.
He is also very intelligent and strategic. He has a strong desire to survive and notices/ is observant to incongruities/discrepancies from others' actions and words and relationships.

It really is bizarre, especially when Hou Minghao is so incredibly good looking already! He actually looks better as his "normal" self.
