To be fair she bullied him first in school, he was just doing the same, giving her a taste of her own medicine. It wasn't hateful bullying, he did it to toughen her up, make her stronger because she was in a slump at work, and it worked, she became better after it.

I would've been happy if they got back together in the present, that would've been a better ending. It would've made the break up in the past not so bad and it would've given that feeling of "it was meant to be" meaning no matter how long they were separated for they would always find their way back together. That way the script wouldn't have to change much, only a scene at the end showing them together as a family after accomplishing their career goals.
