The VIPs are cringe but that's the point, they were cringe is season 1 too. I understand the main characters died too early but they couldn't be all together in the final, otherwise they'd have voted X and finished the games

but what makes you think the ending has ruined everything??? since the first season the series is a critique of capitalism and what people can do for money, i don't get exactly why you consider it a bad ending when since the beginning the theme is about a capitalism society
