Read the novel again and found this particularly interesting - “The previous Ghost King, He Yicheng, was the one who established laws in turbulent times. The former Ghost King, He Simu, was the one who promoted laws in times of order. And the later Ghost King, Xue Chenying, was the one who upheld laws in prosperous times.” This is the best fantasy drama to date. Can’t help but rewatch last few scenes - gosh this drama is solid.
This is within China - in all the past rating records - the raters focused on 3 star and below - this has been the SOP - eg within Tencent platform the score was 9.7 vs 6.9 on douban. The scores were like copy and paste from previous dramas -so much so that one producer or director in SWORD AND ROSE said loosely translated by me in English good people dont see Douban
On Tencent platform -rating is 9.4. Was looking forward to their SOP rating at 6.9 for all Dilraba dramas but this time round it slide down by 2 points .. 6.7 in douban is considered low.
FengYi convinced his companion Ziji - (an immortal who holds the fate of the human and the spirit world) to look at the sacrifices of HSM tasked to uphold peace between the 2 realms for 400 years and to Duan Xi who gave up his life to his love HSM. In the extra episode Ziji explained to HSM why they deserve another shot at life together. This would be absolutely a more meaningful end to audiences. This director gave 2 endings and I won’t be surprise that they set the trend for future dramas to follow suit. No complaints on Ep 40 ending and it is an interesting Take from the director . She is giving audiences to interpret that DX and HSM stay at least together for another hundred years or more Chen Ying ending is very close to the novel and even better ending for him as he is slated to be next sovereign because the spiritual lantern choose him as it chose HSM. Both are happy endings and kudos to the director at least she didn’t give a SE.
Awesome scenes for me - when DX infiltrate enemy camp to capture the head, HSM crushed the rebellious spirits and her ascension to the throne of sovereign. The punishment she received at the Golden Wall of Decree - and many more which I think the majority of viewers can find them in different episodes.
Wow, I loved that scene where Simu was crying so loudly, sobbing, screaming loudly, with the OST and everything…
I might add that Dilraba nailed the multiple roles of HSM, Small and He Yan very well.. just a change of expression gives a different personality. Again her performance is on a different level altogether. And to be frank there is no other person suitable for this role. The producer and director know who they want to begin with. HSM watched for 400 years her loved ones departed and the only person she can’t accept leaving her is DX. That was great scenes between her and DX when she explained why she has to break up with him. Arthur (a newbie to me cos I don’t watch many c-dramas) is the perfect young general who carries a lot of hardships in early years and bears great responsibility to ensure freedom for his country men.
