Say it louder for those in the back. I think people believe that because it's fiction it holds no power or accountability. But as a child I lived in a third world country. I had no one to teach me most of the things I needed to learn...like how to treat people, respect etc. But I had care bears and power rangers and that's where I began learning those things. Fiction, yes, but at an impressionable age, they helped. A lot of these lgbt+ kiddies don't have the help they need to develop and while old enough to know certain things, they learn through these programs. It's harmful when things like this is shown constantly to them. And these networks can't negate their hand in what happens next with a disclaimer from their lawyers

This is why I am SO careful when writing gay POC. I identify as a straight POC and I started writing Gay romance a few years ago when my LGBT+ friends wanted to see themselves in romance novels. The issue was this, there were no LGBT+ POC and if there were any they were super harmful and one of my friends tried to kill himself because that experience was triggering for him. So I take this kind of thing REALLY seriously. My friends came to me and ask if I could write POC one, try writing a gay romance and two, add POC in a way that was better than what they'd see. I was terrified. I'd always written romance and added LGBT+ characters as best friends or siblings but never main characters because I didn't want to offend anyone if I got it wrong. I researched-hell, that was a few years ago and I'm still learning. The LGBT romance reader community kinda rallied around me and encouraged me and they are willing to answer whatever questions I had. What I have learned is this, bullshit stereotyping people because they're from a particular community is harmful, triggering and doesn't serve any good purpose. My whole thing is this, the LGBT+ population are people just like everyone else. They have emotions. They love just as fiercely as everyone else. They laugh, cry, hurt, etc like everyone else. Writers need to stop shoving the LGBT+ community into these little boxes. It drives me crazy when I see my POC LGBT+ friends get disappointed each time they read something or watch something and they aren't represented or they're represented but their characters are on the DL or gangsters who refuse to accept themselves and a whole host of other harmful representations. Anyway, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

But all I'm saying is people keep complaining about a new player in the BL game but not doing it the right way to make it better. No judgement on you--its just if you're not doing the right thing don't complain
