Not always true. My friend is hard of hearing....
She has issues with her family. It is still a fight as a adult that her parents...family and siblings don't try as much.
She works in a school with the deaf and hard of hearing, same issues with the majority of the family.
About the Dad....I don't find it hard to believe he stop talking.... he probably lost himself in the new him. And how he now communications. His wife is death and 1 of his son is also. It is more comfortable/easier for him.
My friend is hard of hearing...pretty much deaf......she prefers to sign. .she doesn’t like to talk...even though she can....it is easier and more comfortable for her to sign. ....she express her frustration with the "hearing " community and her parents. They know she can sort of hear with her hearing aid......so they never learned sign.....she is constantly fighting for an interpreter in all events and interactions

They also had some character growth later on in the movie.
