It wasn't the male lead's mother, but one of his sisters. His mother is played by Lee Ji-Ha (이지하) and the one seen in today's episode is Lee Ji-Hae (이지해).
The main male character is not dead; we see proof of this in the first two minutes of episode 1.
From 2 minutes and 30 seconds into episode 1 until now (episode 12), we are in a flashback.
If you recall, at the very beginning of the series, we see Shin I-Rang at a trial. He is dressed all in black, wearing a black tie with gold patterns, and using a black fan with a charm attached. We hear him introduce himself off-screen, and then a few moments later, he addresses the courtroom and says, "But I haven't always had the power to see ghosts." Then, we see a message on screen: "One year earlier..."
In episode 6, it's clear she avoids his hand and pushes him away when he tries to hug her.
