Douban has its biases - they overrate these kinds of dramas and are very harsh on certain other genres.
In all seriousness, I think looks wise Zhou Ye can credibly pull off a pretty boy - her features are quite angular and arguably handsome if not outright masculine. And there is nothing wrong with her small size - my niece competes in wushu (martial arts) and all the top champions are small in size. And Zhou Ye's fight scenes are pretty good. I think the real issue is Zhou Ye's interpretation of the role is way too flirtatious and as the drama progresses, she has completely abandoned any attempt to play a woman pretending to be a man. She has gone full on flirty girly girl. I think Zhang Tianai delivered a way better rendition of this kind of gender bender in Fighting for Love.
