So far I didn't find anything bad abt ml to the point ppl r making it out to be... he knws the truth so it makes sense fr him to give her gifts as a transaction. He even protects her frm slimy ppl. telling her not to confess is a bad thing? Wt r these ppl on? Now she is ready to tell him but he is not bound to hear confession just so other party can feel better n make him share his secrets.

I don't find a problem in it.... he protected her by being smart. Maybe he thinks it's not necessary to confess as long as they r happy. Not being dumb is not necessarily a manipulation. So far i don’t see him controlling her in anyway or form. Is he restricting her work life n personal life? No.
