Actually they don’t cheat with each other…..her BF is cheating but not with his GF - but let’s just say they are all interconnected with each other in a way. Lots of twists in the first episode.

He talks about that when she finds out he can hear people’s thoughts. He says it’s why he loves to be in water when sound is muffled and his mind is not filled with noise. It’s not a flashback scene that something bad happened - he’s just relaxing his kind in water is how I took it - probably trying to escape whatever noise was around him at the time.
