As you perfectly said, at that scene Vegas' allowed his vulnerable side to slip out, a side which he only showed to Pete in the novel, people may argue that he is manipulating Porsche but when he said that line there was definitely some truth in it. This line is so powerful in the novel cause Vegas' for the first time in hsi life allows himself to be vulnerable and completely surrends himself to Pete. That was the charming point of their story, that Pete brings the best in Vegas' that Pete accepeted him as he is and that made Vegas' be himself around him.

Kinn's logic be like: I trust no one because my ex betrayed me, so what am I gonna do about it? Lock up the only person who proved his loyalty to me over and over again and let my ex, who caused my trust issues in the first place, act as he owns the place.

I do no think the novel is that good anyway, it is written like a fanfic on wattpad, but now when it comes to VegasPete story, that is different. I think the best part of the novel is VP, their story outshined everything else and that is why everyone was hyped about their arc. The series on the other hand did a better job on the main storyline which is why I enjoyed it a lot more than the novel, but as you said they messed up on the side couple. There was no reason for them to change things this much. VP could have worked if their story remained the same as the novel.
