I didn't know signal was a romance drama?!? Its a thriller with very slight romance , if you can call it even that and i thought the woman had more chemistry with the lead in the present. Also there is always an exception to the rule ofc i don't like the older woman /younger woman troupe but it the leads don't show the age gap at all and the theme is more than just romance i tend to enjoy despite that for example jumong and love destiny and viceversa if the female lead looks too much Like an elder woman i don't Like it . couples need to look good. So yeah your logic is dumb af
