I appreciate hearing your interpretation! I didn't see Tul as loving too little or only wanting a wife and child because society expected it of him. I felt his love was for a very good and precious friend, one whom he neither wanted to hurt or lead on, but whom he could not love in the way Garn wanted (romantically). But that's my interpretation, of course.
