Even though China had used gunpowder since ancient time as warfare, they didn't have technology to make handguns. That's why Qing easily fell into western colonies and Japan (who already modernized military). As far I know, initially started by Tang's trading effort, later in Ming dynasty, international trading also flourished. When we saw glasses or sunglasses in C drama costume and K-drama sageuk, that's meant westerners already penetrated the market in far east. They mostly came by the ship.
