The drama plot is deviating a lot from the novel, so you won't find any answers in the novel I'm afraid. There was no ancestor and the main character did not have any kind of relationship with Lin Yan before she transmigrated.

Usually I dislike it when the drama changes the plot so much, because then I think what was the point in adapting the novel, you might as well just have created something new lol. But like you, I really like how they've built on the original concept :)

The vibe of the novel is quite different. It's more slice of life, but looking at the opening and ending sequences, the drama seems that have many more highly emotional scenes. I'm looking forward to it though, I love it a good emotional rollercoaster haha

This really reminds me of another transmigration novel (and its C-drama and donghua adaptations) where there is also a "circle of fate" whereby the ML is "accidentally" responsible for transmigrating the FL, thus ensuring that they can meet and fall in love hehe

Well said! IMO, having a HE for the sake of a HE or because that's what production thinks the audience 'wants' is not good storytelling.

I've always been of the opinion that the best endings are the ones that fit the character arcs, plot, and the themes. And in some cases that means a sad ending, bittersweet ending, open ending, etc (I refuse to call these 'bad endings' just because they're sad) is the most appropriate.
