This deserves a better MDL rating

I'm not sure why this has such a low (7.5 at this time) rating when this is a well-crafted, well-acted, well-produced drama. Maybe people don't like the intertwining of genres (romance and thriller)? But from beginning to end this drama had me enveloped in its eerie world and on the edge of my seat with its suspense.

Every facet of the drama contributed to the immersive atmosphere that perfectly supported a supernatural story. The directing cuts and angles during suspenseful parts had me biting my nails. The characters had depth, understandable motives, and believable tension among themselves. The romance was one thread through the story but it had spark and a well-paced build. The styling of characters, the sets--gritty or lavish as the scene required, even the supporting CGI, all work together to make the world addictive. Perhaps to some the pace felt slow, but I felt it was deliberate--mimicking the pace of the characters who have to move warily because the next step could be perilous.

Yes the ending left a few things hanging, perhaps in hopes for a Season Two, and some of the characters we became invested in didn't receive as much time as they should have at the end, but overall it was a satisfying ending that wasn't too abrupt. And the highest praise I can give is to say that--unlike so many cdramas--it didn't lag in the middle but kept its pace throughout all 32 episodes.

A nicely paced martial arts coming of age drama that kept my interest from start to sensible finish.

After 9 pages of reviews, I don't know why I feel the need to add my two cents except that I've watched a LOT of this genre and Legend of Fei was a such a pleasant surprise after the numerous disappointing storylines that have been served up lately. The plot was dished out one course at a time, not too rushed and not to draggy, with each resolution leading logically to the next mystery. There were no awful censor edits making it disjointed, the ending wasn't stupid or needlessly tragic, and it wasn't a cliffhanger (another fave of late).

Sure, the kids start off whiny and immature, but they grow over the course of their adventures (although Li Yan remains annoying to the end). The main romance grows organically, which takes time, but their mutual admiration and eventual interdependence portray a love that feels really deep and beautiful, even without a lot of skinship. And Wang Yibo's acting was really good. I enjoyed the playful character he created, but he had some nuanced fear and anguish that came off really well too. The secondary characters were more comic-booky, except for Li Sheng, but I liked spending time with them on their quests (except for Li Yan).

So if you're looking for an enjoyable, comfortably paced adventure and enjoy this genre, you should give it a try. Oh, and the music is very good too!

Delightful romance with minimal palace politics

I hate when a show starts off as a romance and then gets bogged down in palace politics. Thankfully this drama gets it. There is some political backstory, but the main focus is on the couple...and they consistently bring the chemistry. There is awesome initial tension as the leads are (rightly) wary of one another, but their progression to love and appreciation for one another is a very natural and perfectly paced. This show is enjoyable on first watch for the suspense, but almost more enjoyable on rewatch when you can skip the boring second couple and just delight in the chemistry of our leads. Zhang Wan Yi as the ML is just as amazing or more so than he was in Lost You Forever, and the FL was excellently nuanced as well. It's a no-brainer--just watch it and enjoy.

3 yrs later there is still no Season 2!

I'm writing this purely for those who are coming to this a few years after its release and assuming it has a conclusion...NO, it does NOT. After 45 episodes, there is a climactic battle, yes, but no conclusion. It leaves you with a "To be continued in Season 2," only there IS NO SEASON 2 in production as of late 2021.

If you want to watch cute little Leo Wu and an enjoyable, slowly building story with decent music, then yeah, this is a decent all around drama. Just be warned that it doesn't have an ending. And like others have said, Xiao Zhan has a very small part.
