SML's prophecy is to kill the evilest demon and ML made him promised to kill himself... so either a) he is saving someone who is actually destined to die b) or he is destined to ruin world and he can't have his loved one get ruined in the process so willing to die
ep2 - taking a guess here based on intro song ... did the demon make SML promise to kill him with the sword because it is actually the FL who is the evilest demon out there.. like a split personality of something.. intro has her sitting in both white and black clothes like twin. but i'd guess it is split personality
