I agree with you completely — you articulated it really well. That’s exactly why he frustrated me so much every time he appeared. He’s not badly written at all; he’s painfully human. His cowardice and insecurities felt very real, which is probably why they were so hard to watch. Instead of facing his fear or taking responsibility for his choices, he kept retreating and reshaping the narrative so that she became the problem. That self-justification was honestly more infuriating than if he had been outright cruel. The final snapback was well deserved— it felt earned and emotionally honest. The actor really sold that internal conflict too, which made the character compelling even when he was unbearable.
