My Liberation Notes

Lately, I find myself saying, "I didn't think I would like this as much as I do," for the last few kdramas I've watched and still watching. Recent dramas have been slim pickings. I think this means things are picking up. I have been in a slump since My Liberation Notes. But this one is good. I am enjoying it so far.

This reminds me of the Japanese medical drama Night Doctor, I loved this drama, highly recommend it

This is why I like this drama. It is creating dialogues. Well, I guess to some, it's controversial. I can understand why the Secondary School Teachers Labor Union would voice concerns over that scene; I thought it was a bit much, but it highlights the education system's flaws more than anything. To me, that scene doesn't compare to the violence and abuse teachers have exhibited toward students in other school dramas. There have been many, and I mean many, scenes in past dramas where a teacher is physically abusive to a student. Or how about some of the blatantly ignored bullying incidents? I am sure many have been the cause of suicide in students. I don't recall any Union body lodging complaints- the double standard is so in your face. Complaints like these are why no one is becoming the change they need: fear of criticism, finger-pointing, and being ostracized. It's a dog-eat-dog world, for sure.

I believe celebrities or public figures are entitled to a level of privacy, but by nature of the profession they have chosen, i.e., seeking recognition, public recognition, might I add, they have thereby surrendered some privacy and opened themselves to the public interest, and that includes news about their private lives, be it dating, marriage, divorce, and so forth. I am not saying the public has the right to their every move, but the newsworthy situations now that are hard to keep private, and most, if not all, celebrities know that it's the price you pay for fame. They cannot have the cake and want to eat it too. I'm just saying.

Are celebrity weddings open to the public; I ask because I genuinely don't know, but I get the sense that if it were it would probably cost you a pretty penny. Let us know how it goes :)

I like these types of dramas. It reminds me of Black Dog, which focuses on the public side of education, whereas this one focuses on the private side. The one thing I have come to realize in K-drama watching time is that SK desperately needs education reforms; learning shouldn't be a burden, and it shouldn't be a job -- it should be enjoyable, not filled with anxiety for the parents or the children. Hagwons pressure parents to enroll their kids in these superior programs, creating situations in which people (especially parents and, by association, their children) will do anything to be successful, even if what they do harms others. The competition is suffocating, or at least that's how it seems. Only by strengthening the public education system will the government provide equal opportunities or at least a fair chance for all students to get into a good university and not have to rely on hagwons or other forms of private education to achieve academic and social success. I think it will eliminate societal discrimination based on education. They have enough to deal with already.

I think the main reason Seo Hye Jin and Lee Jun Ho's parents were/are vehemently against him becoming a teacher and especially a Hagwon teacher is that he went to a prestigious school to gain a prestigious corporation job which carries it with valued if not coveted elite social status economically and socially. He basically threw away his hard earned social status (his parents sacrificed a lot to get him to that point, they made an investment in him by paying hagwon fees so he can go to a top university and have a better life than theirs) in a very status-conscious society, where a corporation job translates to a better life with a stable income. Its really out of concern more than anything else.

I expected to like The Midnight Romance in Hagwon and it far exceeds liking, I am loving it, and cannot wait to experience it full on from week to week.

Well, of course, you are a male. Yeon Woo Jin is 39 and Jang Seung Jo is 42 so, not that much younger than Kim Ha Neul. Her age had nothing to do with how poorly this drama was written and directed. I doubt even a 26 year old would have been able to save it. At this day and age to criticize an actress for her age, I doubt you would have said the same if was the other way around. What a sexist!!!!
