In my understanding, Yan Li's mother hates the current emperor because that is her husband. He left them and seized the throne after killing the true emperor.

Consort Jin is another person i think. She is the wife of Prince Jin. She died because she learned that the emperor is fake using the letters because the handwriting is inconsistent. She compared the letter from the emperor before and after he went to battle.

When the fake emperor killed Consort Jin, Prince Jin was looking for Sui (the little child) at the same and he saw that his wife was killed. He was falsely accused of murdering his wife but didn't tell the truth (he knew the fake emperor did it) because if the court and people found out, the country will be in turmoil.
