I've tried, I really have, to watch those old school kdramas that everyone raves about - you know, questionable 'plots', wooden acting, relentless cliches - and I just can't enjoy them. I can watch offensive but not offensive mixed with dull, dull, dull.

Ah, no, there was a clue in the first episode - a reference to the Jin and/or Qing invasion of Korea (the King wanting to retake the north and release his people) which happened in 1627 and 1636.

But at the time - the 1640s - they really did believe all that quackery (as did the Europeans with their four humors, etc) so it's right for the time.

Because, like missing the BIG FLASHING camera next to the door when she broke in, her character is written to be dumb as a box of hair.

There are lots of great Korean actresses but Go Ah Rah isn't one of them. She can (a) stare and (b) cry.

He's a jerk in the book so unless the series changed the story then, yes. In the book he's a collaborator with the Japanese and gets 16 year old Sunja pregnant, despite being already married.

Yes, Korean Drama regularly normalises female on male violence, even plays it for laughs (e,g. the mother in SWBS).

She really, really liked the lipgloss in Radio Romance. The male lead not so much.

I think she's a good actress - but the character she's playing is unpleasant and illogical.

Her character was written by someone with a deep-rooted dislike of women, particularly 'strong' women. That's why they've made her pointlessly violent, bent and dumb as a box of hair - and needing a good man to set her right. If anything she's an anti-feminist archetype. But the rest is great. The ML is doing just fine but my favourite character is Gong Soo Cheol.

Yes, that stretched credibility beyond breaking point for me.

I liked the second half better, too. The 9 year old mind an a 30-something woman's body Seul Bi gave me the heebie jeebies.
