Perfect show for people with undeveloped frontal lobes

If you’re looking for cringe-heavy, Wattpad-style entertainment tailored for media-illiterate teenagers, complete with rubbish dialogue and constant second-hand embarrassment—all fueled by a concerning amount of smoking—this is the perfect show for you.
Everything about this series is extremely lackluster. Calling it one of the best BL (Boys' Love) shows in existence is distasteful and disrespectful to truly incredible series. However, I must give praise where it's due: as one of the first Chinese BLs, they certainly broke ground. Even if they failed the technical aspects, representation matters.
Maybe I’m being overly critical, but you should only watch this if you don't care about the plot making any sense at all.

What a disappointment

After searching for this show for nearly a month and finally getting 4 episodes with eng subs, I payed out of pocket for a translation app for episode 5 and 6 only to be very disappointed.

So many people were saying this was better than the Thailand reset version, and my expectations were set, only to be immensely ruined. Like, how did they manage to completely miss the mark? Japan usually produces some of the best supernatural thrillers, so what went wrong?

This version is not even remotely close to the original at all; it feels like 2 different shows. Nanno, in this version, does not feel like a supernatural entity, but a high school girl who wants revenge. Almost all the storys are boring and end without very satisfying revenge. Tbh, this felt like a low budgeted, cheap remake rather than something done with precise thought, and it's a shame because the actress was good. I feel like with Netflix theatrical quality, she could have easily demolished this role up.

Such a shame and a waste of time and money I spent. I would rate this much lower if not for the actress, who was carrying the series on her back. Try for yourselves, but for me? I'm out 12 dollars.

A LITERALLY PERFECTION

This review is about Season 1 and not Season 2 Alchemy of the souls Season 1 is the best k drama of the year 2023 in my opinion such an amazing blend of fantasy and a pretty unique idea that was executed to perfection the only reason i gave 9.5 instead of 10 stars is because there are some tiny details i would love to change but all in all an amazing drama and an experience of a lifetime its a definite must watch

Is the Glass half empty or half full?

Why are we so against fun as a society? i mean If we take Perfect Crown at face value, it’s a nice, fluffy rom-com filled with typical K-drama cliches, decent writing, predictable storylines, and okay acting.

But if we dissect it piece by piece and dive into the deeper meanings like some viewers do, it can also be seen as a drama that subtly normalizes classism and entitlement, disguising it through romance, attractive leads, and visually pleasing aesthetics.

I’ve noticed two main reactions to this drama.

1. Overzealous fans who label everything about it a masterpiece and give it excessive praise simply because they like the actors.

2. Overly critical viewers who challenge that mindset by pointing out the hypocrisy and problematic themes hidden beneath its fluffy surface.

But there’s also a third approach, the one I lean toward, which is the average viewer who just wants to be entertained. I encourage this third approach because it allows you to enjoy the show while still being aware of its flaws without going to either extreme.

I’m not here to say either side is completely right or wrong. Both have valid points. The first group tends to overhype even the most mundane aspects, while the second sometimes positions itself as intellectually superior, dismissing those who simply enjoy lighthearted romance without analyzing its deeper themes.

For me, Perfect Crown is an okay show. It was fun and easy to watch. Not everything needs to be deeply analyzed for us to enjoy it, we can appreciate something simply for the entertainment it provides. At the same time, it is also important to acknowledge the subtle messages media can convey beneath the surface.

The shows entire premesis is supposed to be basically a modern day Cinderella story, but i didn't actually think it was one bit. I know it's in a reimagined society where money cannot buy your rank and nobility in this world but I can't take a supposed Cinderella seriously when she's decked out in Louboutins and designer clothes and bags every episode. What about her except her status or illigitimate birth gives Cinderella vibes? Would have made much more sense to actually made her poor if we are supposed to feel bad when people are bullying her or talking down to her. Even the fake marriage trope was really for her side only because the prince was obviously charmed with her from their school days. What's fake about a marriage where the guy wouldn't leave you if he had a gun to his head?

Overall, I found the show to be average. They didn't take any risk and deviate from any norms in the drama world. This show is just a large compilation of every cliche ever done, sweet but basic. The plot was predictable, with obvious twists, but it was still heartwarming and engaging. It’s not something I’ll think about every day of my life, but I’ll remember it fondly.

There are only a handful of dramas with this kind of premise, so from the moment it was announced my interest was already peaked. The royal setting and power dynamics gave it a strong foundation, and it definitely had the potential to stand out more.

However, I don’t think that potential was fully explored. Some conflicts felt like they were introduced with a lot of weight but then resolved too quickly or too conveniently. Certain plot points seemed like they would have long-term consequences, but they didn’t always follow through in a meaningful way.

I also felt like the pacing was slightly uneven. Some scenes were stretched out longer than necessary, while more important developments felt rushed. Because of that, a few emotional moments didn’t land as strongly as they could have.

One of my biggest issues in the show was the fake marriage genre which wasn't even explored in the least. They took about 70 percent of the show to get there and when they did the couple was in love with each other so it's not really a fake marriage. While the couple can care about each other before they get married they shouldn't be passionately and crazily in love just removes any aspect of fake in that marriage. They weren't even married for 1 single episode before divorce came up. How is that a fake marriage?

That being said, the storyline was still enjoyable. I won’t lie, some scenes had me kicking my feet in the air because they were genuinely cute and fun to watch. Those lighter moments are really where the drama shines, and they make it easy to stay engaged. However all twists and turns were so boring and literally predictable? they didn't even let you guess multiple people who were doing the bad things they just left it out in the open.

The main characters, however, felt quite shallow. There wasn’t much more depth to them as it was supposedly presented, their emotions were always very clear, but not in a way that added layers.I mean the show positions them as 2 complex human beings who are both so much more than they appear on the surface and have great internal tormoil but i didn't feel anything more that i couldn't see about their personalities in the 1st episode going on in the show. I would have liked to see more internal conflict or growth outside of their relationship.

Their chemistry was decent and worked for the tone of the show, but it didn’t feel particularly strong or memorable. It felt more like visual compatibility than a deep raw emotional connection, which made the romance enjoyable in the moment but not very lasting. It's like you gather 2 popular kids to date, of course everyone is gonna love them together because they are them but what more?

The side characters and villains, on the other hand, were more interesting. I liked that they weren’t overly aggressive in a typical “I hate you” to your face kind of way. They had more nuance, especially the Queen, who stood out and added a level of tension that the main storyline sometimes lacked. Her character left a very deep impression on me and I could never tell what was on her mind, what she wanted, or her end goal which made me feel excited for her every appearance on screen. She was so much more complicated than what she seems, her backstory and motivation going forth made for a thrilling watch. Her Father was also a really good character his scenes were scantily but still very notable. These aren't your typical villians who divulge in ur presence how much of a nuisance u are but take a step back and make u feel the hate slowly as they go. What a legendary performance.

The side characters were a fun mixed bag. The brother and sister-in-law added humor and warmth, and I appreciated that they broke away from the usual “evil half-sibling” trope, No matter how much he complained or teased her you could always tell he loved her deep down, for that i love the turn it took even his wife and his relationship where some of my favourite parts in the show ,they portrayed a marriage built on love and not political or financial gain among prominent people very unheard of in K dramas. The young King was also entertaining and brought a lot of charm and emotion to his scenes. I was torn between the complexity his simple charcter brought, is it okay to force roles upon people at birth because of traditions? His father and him couldnt live the lives they wanted because they were born into a fixed system the couldnt escape.

Her father's charcter was a mixed reaction I absolutely hated him 90 percent of the time but in some little moments he always showed up. In conclusion i still dislike him.

The Assistants romance was sweet and fun nothing to go crazy about but okay filler for episodes when needed. I much preferred the brothers and sister in laws romance, cute and sweet light and fun hearted they had really good chemistry with one another. I found their chemistry even better compared to our main couples.

As for the Prime Minister, I’m a bit conflicted. While it’s a common K-drama trope for the second male lead to be in love with the female lead, it does feel a bit overused. I think it would have been more interesting if he had a stronger identity outside of that dynamic. There is not much we can do in a world where our fl is adored by every handsome man who graces our screen. I feel myself slowly getting tired of all men are in love with this random girl for literally no reason? Why couldn't u have brought the feelings to her attention before she got into a relationship? His jealousy literary made me gag he had no right to be acting that way.

The plot was predictable every toss and turn it led to I could guess right before it happened, I clocked about 80 percent of what was happening before it even landed. Everyone went with the same format programmed in our brains no out of place behavior. But it's a very typical direct story fake marriage it's a very common format so I can't say I'm entirely mad of how they handled the storyline. These typical chliches are a major reason I fell in love with the k drama world so i would be a hypocrite to say it's all bad.

By the end, I felt satisfied but not particularly impressed. The show was consistently enjoyable and disappointing all together, but it didn’t quite reach a level that made it stand out as something extremely special.

So like I said, it’s good, just not what I would call great. It was funny, swoon-worthy, and easy to watch, and sometimes that’s enough.

At the same time, not everything needs to be extraordinary to be enjoyable. People experience media differently. Some might rate it very highly, while others may not enjoy it at all. I don’t fully agree with either ratings, but I can understand both perspectives.

Which brings me back to the question.
Is the glass half empty or half full?

How should we judge this drama at it's face value?
Do we enjoy it for what it is while acknowledging its flaws, or do we focus too much on what it could have been?

I still believe in a middle ground. We don’t need blind praise or unnecessary criticism.

Sometimes, it’s enough to simply enjoy something for what it is, entertainment.

I know this review is a bit different because it focuses not only on the show itself, but also on how people react to it. There has been a big trend on uncessary hate or love on this platform that led me to make this review. I hope everyone can take a second to acknowledge the perspective of the other person.

P.S pls be nice to me do not send me death threats or long paragraphs on how I'm wrong. I literally say everyone can and should rate it differently because we are all different people with different mindsets.

It's definitely something

Honestly this drama isn't for the faint of heart if u don't like AI futuristic near horroe shows don't watch this. The story follows a woman who uses a virtual reality boyfriend simulator to go on dates with picture perfect men but feeling she's part of a commodity of women and just another number she goes a steo further and creates a perfect ideal man who a large survey but then this giu she created looks exactly like a coworker who she then dates and he finds out and within 2 episodes forgives her and continues the relationship?

Well this is very weird,i know it's a tv show we can't take it and apply it to the logics of the real world but it's very creepy. Imagine if that concept was gender bent or happened in the real world ?
the backlash? the horror? the disgust? i would even pursue criminal charges.

But it's a show that's supposed to be romantic and carefree so we can't take it to heart. I think the story wasn’t that bad no need for 10 episodes tho could have been 8 because it got draggy in the end. Furthermore it's an okay show would never rewatch it under normal circumstances tho. Also i think i am one of the few people ho thought Jisoo did a good job? she wasn't bad at all pretty good and I'm an ARMY . In the end i think inrated it high because i enjoyed the fact it was a different concept then what we were used to.

Overhyped

This platform has a tendency to overhype shows of mediocre viewings. This drama presents a unique storyline with the VR and mystery game concept but it's also not really important in the story,it setves no fundamental essential plotline and only serves as a backing to introduce our main couple. In all honesty i found myself enjoying the 2nd fl story more than this entire thing. Her divorce arc was generally the only thing that kept me entertained. We have seen this story multiple times boss and employee secret romance and the ml has a hidden secret . I could pinpoint 10 shows with this exact storyline all over so why is this one trendy?
I have to admit they have nice good chemistry with good kissing scenes and a strong rapport but that wasn't enough to keep me interested at all.
This is just an average drama that casted 2 beautiful people the end.

WHAT REALLY WERE THEY TRYING TO DO WITH ARIRANG?

What were they really trying to do with *Arirang*?

I’ve been an ARMY for seven years. I love BTS, and I was extremely excited for their new album and documentary—unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy either.

*Arirang* felt very different from what I’m used to. I understand they were aiming for a more mature sound, but it ended up feeling more like a product than BTS. They’ve done mellow songs before—“House of Cards,” “Black Swan,” and “Life Goes On”—but “Swim,” the lead single, felt like the wrong choice. It was too low-energy and lacked impact.

Since the album is called *Arirang*, I expected more Korean-inspired sounds. Instead, it felt geared toward a global—especially Western—audience. Even in the documentary, BTS seemed to want to focus on Korea, while HYBE pushed for a more global direction. As a non-Korean fan, I was drawn to BTS because of their Korean music. I didn’t know their names or personalities at first—I just loved songs like “Boyz with Fun” and “Attack on Bangtan.” The “K” in K-pop matters, and it feels like companies are starting to forget that.

The documentary constantly emphasized “going global,” but at what cost? Why frame something like “Arirang” for Western validation when it’s a deeply Korean cultural piece? It made me question what the project was really about. Some people may call me a hater or a fake fan, but I believe criticism is part of being a real fan. Chart numbers and views don’t necessarily reflect genuine appreciation—BTS are musicians, and their music should come first.

It also felt like the documentary tried to make *Arirang* appeal to everyone except Koreans themselves, which came across as distasteful. For example, when they mentioned the story of seven Korean boys who went to Washington, D.C. in the 1800s, they left out the fact that most institutions rejected them—except Howard University. That context matters. The lack of acknowledgment felt disappointing, especially given the historical significance.

Even visually, there seems to be a pattern of appealing more to Western audiences. For an album like *Arirang*, I expected stronger Korean representation, but that wasn’t always the case. It raises the question: were they celebrating their culture, or trying to reshape it for Western approval?

I’m still a fan, and I’ll always support BTS, but these are important conversations to have. *Arirang* isn’t a bad album—it’s just not their best. You can disagree, because music is subjective, but we shouldn’t place artists above criticism. Critiquing them is part of appreciating them—it shows we understand the difference between loving BTS and loving their music.

A comfort watch

Can we first talk a moment to appreciate a korean drama about food actually takes time to talk and showcase the food not just in a quick way but a feel good way that allows the viewers to crave what they see on screen. Now for the story it was an interesting premises as someone who hasn't read the manga i enjoyed some parts of the drama other parts where lackluster and honestly no point. Maybe because it was short i felt like their romance was only showcased in 2 episodes the rest of the episodes where them falling in love and the ending i was confused by alot but honestly it's not a bad drama it's fun easy and relaxing to binge watch i would say its one of the best dramas of 2025 but not one of the best korean dramas of all time

A TOTAL SNOOZE FEST

i watched it all in 1 sitting and found the entire drama literally pointless it doesn't give you the feeling of joy when watching but just mindlessly lackluster entertaiment as u try not to sleep through the entire thing. Almost all the characters are one dimensional with no character growth, the fight scenes are crafted as these over the top fight for your life kind of things but lack the substance to do so it was like i was watching 2 people fight each other for no reason there were some fights i didn’t even want the ML to win just to spice things up to shake off the feeling of absolute boredom and this K drama truly has the potential for the worst written Villians because they were so useless and non scary i was so confused the entire time. South Korea wants to write Superhero dramas but forget the reason why we love our superheros they are funny charismatic and engaging, literally every superhero in this show could have died without me caring because i didnt connect to a single charcter. Comparing it to another famous superhero Drama MOVING, i think that drama fully made the audience actually like their superheros we saw them as regular human beings but faced with Great power and became absorbed in their lives this drama however failed to do that woefully.Even the supposed ML and FL were boring as a dimlit candle i found myself wondering why i ever decided to watch this show in the first place?
But in the end of the day i can't say it's the worst Korean drama in the world and it definitely serves as a background noise to sleeping at most but what the heck give it a try if u will.

The Pursuit of mediocrity

This drama had a very good first half, the village era was really rich and interesting but the moment they left it, it all came tumbling down here are some things i liked in this drama

1. Good chemistry: the kissing scenes in this drama were actually surprising to me they were high quality and actually good. I also loved the leads i feel like a military plotline was wasted on them because they could have had a romance drama and everyone would have loved it. Even the 2nd leads as toxic as they were also served incredible chemistry.

2. The first half of this drama had me hooked binged the first 15 episodes straight it was funny and very engaging.

3. I loved the fact the female lead knew martial arts and was a butcher we barey get to see women use their heads in Chinese dramas so this change of pace really hooked me on this show.

4.Most of the side charcters her sworn brothers, sister , the princess, the restaurant owner and her uncle and aunt were all very well written i loved their scenes and they exhibited a real family very well.

Now for some things i didn't like

1.The boring subplots and the confusing side charcters, maybe it's just me the whole secret princes minister wei and her father being a criminal arcs where severely boring i put all those scenes on 2x because why do we have more than 3 villians? very uncessary why are we adding villans all over the place how do u expect one to keep track with one if u make more than 3?

2.Dragging storyline and plotlines why did she only find out his indentity ep 27? with only 13 episodes left it feels off putting for some users and definitely discourages people who don't like long dramas

3.The whole military plotline tbh, i generally wished it was just a typical revenge or romance historical drama the whole military arc was annoying confusing and just stole the valuable screen time of our couple for almost a good 5 episodes they don't imteract with one another in the name of war and finding her sister it was very annoying.

4. Failure to introduce new characters and keep up with their plots. Why would u introduce a new character in that way? they would just add them in like they were part of the story then forget them for 5 episodes and leave them be? why? The Princess, the grand tutor? if you introduce people midway in the drama u give the impression they are of some kind of importance but when u don't even mention them or remove any kind of scenes with them for 3 episodes or more just to introduce them again if feels like u completely loose the plot.

All in all it's not a bad drama it's certainly ok but i was expecting better but people on this platform have a way of hyping up some dramas then u end
up being disappointed. Definitely try for yourselves

An Okay watch

This drama has some parts that get u super hooked and some parts which are endlessly boring and dont make sense and leave u with more questions than answers aside from the first 2 episodes which where a total snooze fest the rest of the story is actually productive although they could do better with time and spacing all in all it's a nice drama to watch

CRIMINALLY UNDERATED

Very good zombie apocalypse drama with very healthy and very expressive main leads they both are very good at communicating and their chemistry is very good. In my opinion one of the best k drams with the potrayal of woman in existence. I like the way we see the leads fall in love and their friendship before the relationship. Also very good potrayal of a zombie apocalypse very similar to Other tv shows and movies but in an apartment complex setting. It definitely deserves to be considered one of the best k dramas of all time shame it's underrated.

A decent movie

i was skeptical to goninto it because of it's erotic nature but it was actually a really decent movie. It was just about sex. The intimate scenes were used to potray power control and abuse. The premises itself is very intriguing and the story is very cautionary. Its definitely a person to person opinion on this movie because i found it watchable an decent but another person might now. Just remove ur bias watch and form ur own opinion.
