It focuses on the story of a girl who will run back to the past to save the person that saved her, and a boy that will stop at nothing to protect her from harm even if it could kill him.

It's popular because most people loved it. Just because it's not up to your preferences doesn't mean you're allowed to shit on the feelings of others enough to generalize them in one group. People who never watched k-drama before loved it as much as people who were in their k-drama slump did. Its popularity speaks for itself.

Like I've said before, Taesung was ML coded while Sunjae was 2nd ML coded.
The writer showed us for the first that a guy who fell love at sight with an FL could finally win the battle, instead of the bad boy who only noticed her once she started changing herself. That was the usual trope of popular romantic dramas. The cool, popular guy get the girl at the end, instead of the goody-two shoes who is simply the best choice but was paid dust because he could not compare to the main lead.
So, I understand why some prefer Taesung on getting the girl because he was the typical male lead type. I see it myself. That makes the whole drama fresh to me.
