i think op is going towards the fact that korea in general is extremely homophobic and no amount of love you have for kdrama and kpop is gonna change the fact how discriminatory the korean society is, not just to lgbt people but also racially. extremely racist and homophobic. also i don't think i need to mention how sexist they are.
so often times korean dramas make the queer or non korean character as villain. not because " yay repp" but because " ew no give them bad role"

sure joo yeo jung's air time was very less. sure he's barely holding onto the main character cast. sure he is just the love interest of FL and he's not the ML according to character importance. Sure his character was pretty irrelevant and his role could have been easily divided into minor characters. Sure he wasn't that important. but JYJ was necessary for FL's mental health. she needed to know there was someone who loved her unconditionally. he became her reason to come back home at the end of the day. he was her healing. this is why he was necessary

and that's why this is so realistic. because majority of the couples around the world are like this. one partner loves the other more, sometimes too much more. this doesn't make the partner who loves less bad or that they are cheating. the less loving partner also loves the other one dearly but they just don't love enough. its not even that theyll fall for someone during the relationship and youll have reason to hate them, theyll love you and you only, just not as much as you do.
