TBH it actually annoys me more in period dramas where characters act in a way that simply isn't realistic to that place and time. You can make your protagonist an iconoclast and rebellious. But then others in their life WILL be uncomfortable with it. The catch is can we understand the ML's POV and think that he is good for the FL, considering the era they live in. Don't depict modern relationship dynamics and modern values in something set 70+ years ago. Otherwise what's the point of making a period piece? Just write a modern drama.
