On Moonlit Reunion Jul 31, 2025
Has there ever been a drama on MDL not listing the year when it's about to air in a few weeks? MDL must not like Xu Kai.

Since I follow, from SEL to ABAY, all on Viki as soon as it airs, are they all Tencent?

Moonlit Reunion is a co-production between Linmon and Tencent. Doesn’t that make it more likely to stream on WeTV International—like ADWAD, which was co-produced by Linmon and iQIYI and ended up with international distribution?

Xu Kai’s dramas seem to always show up on Viki, and most of his earlier ones from Yanxi to SEL are still available on YouTube.

She could be because apparently in ancient China people don't seem to recognize females in mens clothing.
In ancient China, young women in their 20s could easily disguise themselves as men because everyone was shorter, both men and women had long hair, young Chinese men didn’t have much facial hair, their clothes were similar for both genders, and their faces looked less obviously male or female.

Han Ting’s character is a narrative accelerator—brilliant, connected, and fast-moving. After studying in Germany, he swiftly launched Dongyang’s R&D center, then founded or acquired Hanhai Technologies to specialize in 3D medical design. Backed by Dongyang Medical’s massive database, he created the infrastructure Ji Xing needed to develop and launch her product at high speed.

This kind of execution isn’t just fiction—it mirrors real-world disruptors. Elon Musk's xAI built its AI data center in just three months, with Nvidia chips running in only 19 days—a feat that usually takes years. Han Ting’s role in ABAY reflects how extraordinary leadership and access to cutting-edge infrastructure can compress timelines that seem impossible in traditional systems.

I found excerpts from the novel mentioning "pre-trial" and preparations for trials, and that clinical trials take up to two years—but no mention of animal testing. The novel’s omission is a narrative choice to focus on Ji Xing’s arc, not regulatory oversight. They did move to clinical within a year. Dramas—especially romantic ones—exist to explore emotional truths and character journeys. I believe ABAY delivers as balanced a story as it can, intertwining the emotionally rich evolution of love with the complex area of medical AI innovation and high-tech entrepreneurship.

Ji Xing developing the simulation in 6 months to me is plausible given that Han Ting gave them the knowledge to leapfrog it (HT already has the knowledge without spoiling how). She signed on with Han Ting in Ep. 8 (12/2/22) at that time, she had successful simulation; otherwise, Han Ting's cousin would not have been interested to invest in her (the cousin read the proposal and was interested in her design and amazed at the speed of development) and Donyang Medical's Board would never approve without it.

Then it took 10 months from simulation to 3D (12/2/22 to 9/17/23) which is plausible. Her 3D was success in Ep17 and the milestone contract was dated 9/17/23.

Then came the hospital clinical trial (Ep. 24) 2 months later, 9/17/23 to before 12/1/23 (without spoiling this date). This 2 to 2.5 mos. are short and would be more plausible if 3 to 4 mos. min. possibly the story needed to move story to Chinese New Year again.

The product is not a new invention or experimental nature, but a new design of existing products in the market (Hanhai has been developing for 5 yrs) using materials that hospitals have been using.

It’s feasible to assume "pre-trial" may have involved the hospital took her simulation 12 months ago (12/2/22) after she signed on with Dongyang Medical, to complete animal testing and regulatory approvals using Ji Xing’s simulation for parallel testing, leveraging Dongyang’s massive database for a PEEK-based optimized implant (PEEK is super-strong, high-tech plastic often used in advanced medical devices and implants).

The animal testing would be done by the hospital research facilities, taking her simulation, scaling it for animals. This is feasible as hospitals have 3D printing and expertise to adapt designs for pigs/rabbits, using Dongyang’s data and XingChen's specs (Cad models). Dongyang's database contains prior animal testing data for PEEK implants reducing the scope of new tests and speed up approval process. Once Ji Xing finalized the 3D for human use, they collaborated with the hospital for human testing which the novel mentioned could take up to two years. It is plausible the hospital had already been doing pretrial approvals while they were waiting for her parts. She had a drop-dead deadline too otherwise; the board was going to axe her. Her CAD specs the hospital can use for their testing while she buys expensive CAD machine, learn how to use it, get the materials, and optimized the 3D process, but that was not all she was doing during these 10 months. Han Ting was driving her hard on other developments too.

Excerpts from novel that mentions her collaboration with medical researchers/doctors:

"Since they met at the exhibition two or three months ago, they had not seen each other since. She did not report her work to him again. She had not reported any contracts, project implementations, or pre-trial preparations to him." [so here in the novel, it mentioned that there were "pre-trial preparations" going on but does not say it's animal testing; but then later it talks about how she's been preparing for clinical trials too]

"Over the past few months, XingChen and three cooperating research institutions had gone through a long process of selecting trial group members, sample testing, and screening volunteers. They had finally identified the first batch of test subjects. After receiving the information of the volunteer patients, XingChen used its independently developed 3D printing process to print a bone fusion device suitable for the patient in less than an hour.
After a complex and rigorous series of preparatory work, today, one of the three research institutions, Xianchuang Medical Research Center, would be the first to perform surgery on a severely ill patient with lumbar disc herniation."

"Dr. Tu, one of the project leaders said, “The PEEK material has good flexibility and can buffer the pressure between bones…”

In the novel, it revealed that XingChen's design was well-optimized, a competitive advantage.

"Han Ting didn’t mind and asked, “How long did it take to print?”
Ji Xing quickly replied, “Half an hour.”
“Not bad,” Han Ting said.
Ji Xing smiled.
He continued, “Speed it up even more.”
Ji Xing’s expression changed quickly."

"Han Ting asked her, “Have you planned out the next work schedule?”
“En.” She glanced at the Porche parked outside the door, knowing that he was pressed for time. She hurriedly picked up her pace and reported, “Just like what you said, we need to speed up. Other than that, the clinical trial for the bone fusion device will take more than two years. The development of dentures will be slightly shorter. These two products can be pushed forward in trials in an orderly manner. Next, the company needs to choose which types of products to further develop. It may be necessary to consider multiple factors such as market demand, competition, and similar products before making a decision. Conducting research will take some time.” After hearing this, Han Ting said, “Not bad, your thinking is clear. Let’s do it this way.”
He was pressed for time, so as he spoke, he was already leaving. Ji Xing replied, “Once the research is completed, we will ‘promptly’ report back to you.” Han Ting turned his head and looked at her over his shoulder. He smiled silently and walked away."

I really like the lead actors but this drama was written by people who do not like women. Which is why I had to…
She already broke up with her boyfriend long ago. She and Han Ting have been developing feelings for each other, but she didn't' want to get involved with him. She wanted to focus on her company. She did not sleep with her boss just to feel better. There have been so many romantic moments leading up to this scene esp in Germany together. She just doesn't realize she's falling in love. He made her feel so special on her birthday, she forgot why she was upset. He asked her what do you want to do, she said I want to drink so that kind of loosen her up too. Before that, she was waiting for him and learned that Xingyue club belonged to him, then it dawned on her that the food he brought that day was food he had specially cooked for her. Then later he gave her a necklace. so basically, he made her feel so special, she fell in love with him in that moment, She didn't' do it to feel better, and he didn't take advantage of her. He said, "forget it, I was joking." but she agreed. You don't do it if you don't have feelings for someone.

Zhang Linghe grew up in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, a major city in China’s economically advanced Yangtze River Delta. From 2016 to 2020, Wuxi’s GDP per capita ranged from ¥165,800 (~$25,900 USD) to ¥180,000 (~$27,800 USD)—over three times the national average. The city thrived on high-tech industry transformation, a booming real estate sector, and strong consumer growth, with expanding retail networks and e-commerce. According to reports, Zhang’s father was a manager in real estate, and his mother reportedly ran a franchise supermarket, contributing to a financially secure upbringing. That stability likely gave Zhang the freedom to shift from electrical engineering to acting—a rare move in China, where career changes often face economic and cultural obstacles. Most people—whether in China, the U.S., or elsewhere—get stuck in a rut unless they take bold risks. But good for him! to get to do what he loves! instead of boring job!
