Oh okay — so you do know Bai Jue is emotionally repressed (even Shanggu pointed that out). Sounds like you just find Xu Kai boring no matter what kind of role he plays, and that’s totally fair — not every actor clicks with everyone.
That said, I don’t agree that his characters or acting are the same in every role. If that were true, he wouldn’t have won Breakthrough Artist in both 2020 and 2023. Just last year, he picked up three awards for Outstanding Performance, Creative Actor, and Quality Actor.
In 2024, he made a real shift with two CEO roles — a first for him — and he has a couple of upcoming dramas that aren’t historical, fantasy, or CEO-centered. So, it’ll be interesting to see how those expand his range.
I will wholeheartedly agree with recs for Wonderland of Love (my queen of c-dramas honestly) and Ancient Love…
WOL is not listed as a fantasy. His fantasy dramas are The Legends, Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain, Dance of the Sky Empire, Ancient Love Poetry, Snow Eagle Lord, Sword and Fairy, and Moonlit Reunion. Each is so different that it's really hard to compare.
Going on 3 months, still in the top ten, dropped from #2 to #8 on Douban's currently popular list, #1 Mobius #2 Twelve Letters (Ai Jia from FIYS! he's still only 24!). #3 This Thriving Land #4 Legend of Zang Hai #5 The Immortal Ascension #6 Beloved #7 The Long Way Back #8 Moonlit Reunion #9 The Narcotic Operation #10 Footprints of Change #11 A Dream within a dream
For context, dramas in Douban’s top ten typically have ratings of at least 7.0. 7.5, 7.8, 7.2, 7.1, 7.5, 6.9. 7.9, 6.6 (Moonlit Reunion), 7.5, 7.0, 7.1, etc.
If I had to rate this drama based only on its production, visuals, and cast, I would give it a solid 9.0. However,…
I know the story pretty well so I will randomly watch an episode or two once in a while. I think the story is so well done and acted out, even though it's sad, it's also such a beautiful story.
the problem that I have with Kai is that his characters and acting is the same in every drama like every !! He…
Bai Jue's nickname is literally "Ice Cube" because of his cold, ancient personality. You just proved Xu Kai nailed the role perfectly. Liking the character type is personal taste — it doesn't make the show boring.
You're conflating the character with the actor's performance" mixing up two separate things and treating them as if they're the same. The character: Bai Jue is written to be cold, ancient, and emotionally distant — an "ice cube" by design. The actor's performance: Xu Kai played that role exactly as intended/
So, when you say the show (or Xu Kai) is "boring" because the character is cold, you're blending your dislike of the character type with how well the actor delivered it. They’re connected, but not the same. Xu Kai nailed the role — even if the role itself isn’t your vibe. That’s the difference.
If you want less "ice," try Xu Kai in Arsenal Military Academy or Best Choice Ever.
link to vertical drama called, "Lucky Strike," starring Wu Jia Yi and produced by Yu Zheng. I read these kinds of micro dramas are booming and catching up to Chinese dramas. "Vertical dramas are rapidly catching up to traditional Chinese dramas in popularity and revenue, with China's vertical drama market already surpassing its box office earnings."
@Manjilparajuli: Yes, Xu Kai is one of the popular young actors in China, was envied because of his looks at least…
Got it — Xu Kai’s your favourite actor. Why don't you ask Bai Lu fans and Esther Yu fans if they think their artist is targeted or not? There is a MDL fan page for each actor. You can find out more about them over there.
Xu Kai is my favourite chinese actor. I want to ask you guys who are the most popular chinese actors and actress.…
I want to know because I am curious why is Xu Kai your favourite Chinese actor? What makes Xu Kai special to you, and how does he stand out from other actors?
There are awards, like the recent Weibo awards, that are fan-driven — not industry-determined. They reflect popularity, not necessarily prestige. Even the usually diplomatic Marcus Here! couldn’t help but remark on it: “to accept some interestingly named awards.” Xu Kai has received titles like Best Actor, Actor of the Year, Leap Actor, Breakthrough Artist, Outstanding Actor, Creative and Quality Actor, Most Popular Overseas Actor, and Most Charming. However, he’s not the type to pick up those “Scream God” awards — the ones that seem to go to actors riding the biggest media buzz.
