Maybe later on it becomes clearer. It was a weird way to start the story though. It seems they don't remember each other yet. Well, obviously, they don't seem to. However, the other guy might, since his manager knows he has someone he needs to impress. So he has someone on his mind and he's interested in the shorter guy. Maybe he remembers.
