Dani is a Japanese official whose task is to persuade Korean families to change their names to Japanese names under the policy of Changssi Gaemyeong (Soshi-kaimei) during Japanese colonial rule in Korea. However, an influential clan head in Suwon, Seol Jin Young, refuses to change his name, citing 700 years of his family's genealogical records which would be ended with him if he changed his family name. Dani, a peaceful art lover and appreciator of Korean culture who also has a budding attraction to Seol's daughter, is caught between his personal feelings and his duties.
