At the end of the Meiji era, Atsushi was sent to a temple in Fukui Prefecture for training and had poor days since he was a boy and did not even practice or study. One day, a fragrant scent passed through Atsushi's nose. It smelled like a cutlet made in the kitchen of an army dormitory. Atsushi, who had never eaten Western food until now, was impressed by the taste of cutlets he had eaten from the army, and he pushed through his parents' opposition and went to Tokyo to become a Western cook. Arriving in Tokyo, Atsushi learned cooking with fellow apprentices, Shintaro and Tatsuyoshi, and after various hardships, he went up to the highest rank and became the "emperor's cook".
