Sae Byuk is a spunky, determined, optimistic young. She has suffered throughout her life, but always tried her best. Sae and Ho Se can't help but fall in love, but his mother, who is completely obsessed with him, doesn't approve. I cried a lot at the beginning. Toward the end of the series, Ho Se's mother is a complete monster. However, the writers feel that instead of Sae Byuk keeping her spunky, she should cow tow to her mother-in-law. Once, as MIL is in the hospital with cancer, Sae Byuk said that it was Sae Byuk's fault that MIL was sick. WHAT?? SB, you can't cause cancer. The last few episodes were totally ridiculous, but it does have a happy ending. Personally, I would have loved to see MIL lose all of her wealth since she was so hypocritical and looked down on those who didn't have money. There was a section, where it was said that Lohas warehouse burned down in the past and they almost went bankrupt. Kangs had to borrow money from everyone. The Kims, who didn't have anything and were the Kang's housekeeper and driver, actually offered to loan them money. Still, Mrs. Kang looked down on them and couldn't be ruder.

Hard to rate, a 9.5 if you like Yoona.

I don’t know how to rate this drama, if I remove about 75 episodes, I could give it a 9 or 10.
I had to skip a lot of random episodes to enjoy this.

Yoona did a good job carrying the bulk of this drama considering it was her first go as a lead and she was 18 at the time.

The ML had an weird facial expression( he has the same expression in “Tale of Two Sisters”), it takes you out of the scenes he is playing.

The other ML’s anger issues became tiresome after episode 2.

The writing was amateurish/lazy at times, using the “lack of clear communication” plot device to stretch out the story and create tension, drama and comedy. Introducing characters to fill time.

If you focus on the Yoona episodes it’s an enjoyable watch.

Wow what a nostalgic show, a cherished show indeed

Watching this as a 12 year old was certainly overwhelming but in a good way. I couldn’t believe there was such a tragic story and such a crazy stop at nothing antagonist, Subin. The wild character tropes & storylines would be something I would come to see often in the world of kdramas and I was well prepared.

I didn’t even know Yoona was a pop star when I watched this as I knew of kdramas before kpop. Thankfully this show along with ‘Happiness in the wind’ was part of a cultural awareness slot which premiered on non cable tv back then for a few hours a day. Very grateful.

**The show introduced me to the complex society of south Korea and their fundamental societal roots. As a young American pre teen at the time, I certainly learned the vastly different culture in which I still appreciate to this day.
I honestly can’t say if it’s a must watch, it’s just a special show to me and watching the beginning credits sends a wave of nostalgia in which I can vividly remember bombarding my family with this show every evening, sitting closely to the tv to see what was happening in the newest episode, feeling like I was somehow connected to the county miles away.

If you like drama centered around family as well as romance, well this is packed with that you’ll laugh and cry-not even being corny I remember sobbing while trying my best to copy the Korean words I was learning sloppily. Shows like these are more in depth than the typical 16 episode series nowadays, so you should watch if you’re a true Korean culture/drama fan and appreciate the era of 2008-2010.

Too long

The show started off very well and went down down hill from around 70th epiosde. The last 50 episodes with the cruel mother inlaw and the pathetic simpering cowardly daughter in law were horrible to watch. Let me down badly . The rest of the family was good. thehero was a dumbass with no courage. Herione was simpering cowardly girl. The acting made up for the poor story at the end . The romance was bad. The lead hero long exception didnt know how to act. Overall it started off very well for.me but highly disappointed with the end.

Disappointing...

I don't know why but for some reason I had high expectation, it turned out to be a complete flop. One of the worst chemistry for a lead couple ever. They might as well replace the male lead with a random support character and it wouldn't matter. Most of the relationship is one sided, FL who is doing most of the heavy lifting and constantly being abused meanwhile ML barely there or reacting, all talk no action, it's truly exhausting to follow their relationship, especially with the unjustified hatred from the in-laws. It turned to a pure blind hatred.

The drama had no clear direction, around mid way through they were making shit up as they go. Random plots and character appearing and disappearing. Soo Bin completely disappeared in the last 1/3 despite being a main character, they didn't even bother writing anything for her. Even though she had a heavy involvement/impact on the story early on. Yu Ri's father inclusion was the worst part about the drama. For the second half there was no story going on other than the leads' story, all side stories were dead by then.

I don't recommend this drama. Because of the amount of shit they were making up, they writers completely trapped themselves in a corner and the only option to get out is to introduce terminal illness to force some emotional investments from the viewers for the climax. Evidently, the ending turned out to be bad with how they decided to execute it.
