Sunflower is a 24-hour internet cafe in Tokyo that’s comfortable and reasonably-priced. It is a haven that appeals to part-timers like Goto-san, our protag, a 30-year-old man who lives and works there to maintain an undemanding lifestyle. As he quietly floats along on the currents of life, he interacts with other customers, blithely enjoying life and engaging in a sweet romance but the world around him is changing with redevelopment for the Olympics and a deteriorating jobs market. Goto-san is forced to acknowledge this when the virus outbreak affects business and he is exposed to how tough it is out there. The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed how precarious life is at the bottom of society and Goto-san captures this. Ostensibly a quirky drama about an amiable guy in an internet cafe, this turns into a critique of our current capitalist hellscape via watching a Freeter’s lifestyle unravels and goes to an ending just as devastating as any apocalypse movie.
