Ah Xian resides in the heavily polluted industrial, coastal area at Lin Yuan, Kaohsiung in Southern Taiwan, surrounded by a multitude of oil and chemical factories. With her husband fired from the factory, her mother-in-law in a nursing home, and her daughter left for Taipei seeking job employment, Ah Xian is on her own to take on multiple jobs to support the family financially. When she picks up a new part-time job as the bathroom cleaning lady for the midnight shift and encounters a young bar patron, she begins to re-examine her life, her marriage, and her family values. Her desire to change climaxes. She struggles to manage her family responsibilities as she begins to discover her own “self” and yearns what the rest of the world out there has to offer.
