Plot Overview

The story is “adapted from the novel Yi Ou Chun, the story blends romance, investigation, and court intrigue."

• Early Meeting: Xie Qingyuan and Shen Run meet at their lowest points in life as street orphans/exiles and share a quiet promise of survival, marked by a simple token (a penny).

• The Return: Years later, Xie Qingyuan infiltrates and returns to the powerful Marquis's/Xie household to seek justice and uncover the truth behind her birth mother's poisoning and death.

• The Game: Shen Run rises through the imperial court as an official and is assigned to oversee the very same aristocratic family during its crisis, leading them to join forces as “blade and scabbard, they become each other's sharpest weapon as they pursue revenge.”

The Plot

The story follows a double-revenge narrative set against political corruption in the imperial court. Years ago, Shen Run (Xu Kai) lost his family to a political setup and was sent into military exile, while Xie Qingyuan (Zhou Ye) became a homeless orphan after her mother's mysterious death. The two crossed paths as children at their lowest points and promised to survive.

Years later, they meet again under false identities. Qingyuan returns to the powerful Xie family as a seemingly weak daughter to investigate her mother's murder. Meanwhile, Shen Run has risen to become a powerful, ruthless court commander sent to investigate corruption within that exact same family. Initially using each other in a dangerous game of wits, they eventually recognize their childhood bond and team up.

• Shen Run (played by Xu Kai): The commander of the Dianqian Department (殿前司指挥使). He is a deeply complex, multi-faced strategist who acts ruthless and calculating on the outside to survive court politics, but holds a deeply buried sense of loyalty and a soft spot for his childhood promise. (iQIYi)

• Xie Qingyuan (played by Zhou Ye): A fiercely intelligent and clear-minded "black lotus". Though she acts like a fragile, sheltered young lady to navigate the treacherous Xie household, she is actually an enigmatic and resilient planner tracking down her family's dark secrets. (iQIYi)

The production team specifically leaned into Song Dynasty aesthetics for the show's visual design. The characters' styling incorporates traditional Song-style pearl facial ornaments (珍珠面饰) and lotus hair accessories, while the filming locations blend Jiangnan water town scenery with authentic Song Dynasty architecture.

The Palace Security Bureau was responsible for the emperor's security during travels, and in terms of grandeur, no civil or military official at court could match them. Such opulence and splendor, combined with such celestial looks, made it understandable that Shen Run might be difficult to deal with—after all, the more superior one's qualities, the more lofty one's perspective and demeanor. Yet, as a man of official circles, even if arrogant, Shen Run would not neglect courtesy. From a distance, Shen Run cupped his hands in greeting. "I did not know the Commissioner was gracing us with your presence. I apologize for not welcoming you properly." (This does not sound like the Shen Run from the clips and trailers for the drama, so courteous... is Xu Kai playing him differently).

Xie Yui is Xie Shu in the novel (father) referred to as Lord Xie or Marquis, comes from a military background nearly thirty years with countless subordinates and disciples under his command. He is pretty high rank, second rank official.

he has been demoted from Military Governor for Youzhou Prefect supposedly due to conflicts with the Emperor's political views. He was previously Jiannan Circuit Military Commissioner. Before he fell, he had took up a post in Jiannanadao as Military Commander in Shengzhou but his family resided in Hengtang.

after he fell, he still wants to volunteer to lead the campaign against Stone Citadel, which later in the novel, I think he failed and Shen Run had to risk saving him

ML's brother Shen Che’s temperament was more casual, free-spirited, and cheerful.

The head of the Shen family was implicated in the crown prince succession case years ago and was executed in the marketplace. The mistress of the household soon fell ill and passed away as well.
