Honestly, this is such a beautiful and captivating story. ❤️ Two people who were separated in childhood finally meet again after many years, but neither of them realizes that they are actually the childhood friends they once knew.
What makes the story even more interesting is that both of them are incredibly clever. They understand each other so well, and their chemistry is amazing, yet the truth about their past is still hidden from them. Watching their journey is emotional, heartbreaking, and romantic all at the same time.
And Xu Kai… absolutely brilliant! 👏 His acting is outstanding, especially in the emotional scenes. He really knows how to express feelings through his eyes and expressions.
I’m genuinely loving this drama. It has mystery, emotions, sadness, romance, and a beautiful story that keeps you wanting to watch the next episode. ❤️
Definitely a drama you should give a try! ✨

Good watch

Despite the popular actors, in fact I dont care much for popular actors as long as the storyline is original and can keep me in suspense.

Estelle Chen from "Love like the Galaxy" should have been part of the 'main leads' as she is intrinsically linked to the FL. I really love the tension between Estelle's and Zhou's as this really brings out their brilliant acting skills.
Im just disappointed that these girls didnt get swords 🤭
Instead, Zhou is used as a knife in someones hand.

I love the ML and FL obvious suspicion of each other and their flirting and even their subtle care (which viewers cant really tell) for each other.

Episode 1: "Don't tell me you've forgotten me already?"
The script writer is good at playing with my mind with this line from the ML
I am still confused whether he is talking about their past (childhood sweetheart) or present meeting.
Did he recognise her?

In Episode 4 is another maze of enigma for me.
I found his extreme anger at the nanny for beating her, him protecting her, and his possessiveness puzzling too. Is he protecting his childhood sweetheart or a stranger he only presently had interactions with?

So, as a viewer, I love this "tickle your mind" storyline. It keeps me looking forward to another episode.

A revenge story carried by chemistry and strategy

This series combines revenge, political intrigue, and romance through the story of Qingyuan, a woman who returns to the Xie clan determined to uncover the truth behind the tragedies that destroyed her family. Alongside her is Yan Rui, a powerful and influential figure who has his own reasons for targeting the corruption hidden within the clan.

What makes their dynamic interesting is that their relationship is built on history. They knew each other as children and share a connection that comes from surviving difficult circumstances together. Years later, they reunite under very different identities, but with a common goal of exposing the truth and bringing down those responsible.

Qingyuan enters the Xie clan to reclaim her place and pursue her own revenge, while Yan Rui needs someone inside the family to help him investigate their crimes. Their partnership begins as a strategic alliance, with both of them using each other to achieve their goals. However, the more time they spend together, the more their relationship evolves beyond simple convenience.

The romance is definitely one of the strongest elements of the series. Yan Rui, especially, makes his feelings very obvious early on, and watching their playful interactions and constant back-and-forth is one of the highlights. They challenge each other, tease each other, and have a natural chemistry that makes their scenes enjoyable to watch. Their relationship feels like a mix of reluctant trust, rivalry, attraction, and mutual respect.

I also enjoyed that Qingyuan is not simply a character being protected by the male lead. She has her own motivations, intelligence, and determination, and it works because both of them bring something valuable to the table.

The dialogue flows well, and the story moves at a very fast pace. At times, the speed can make certain developments feel rushed, and the acting quality can feel inconsistent depending on the scene. However, the chemistry between the leads helps carry the series and keeps the emotional aspects engaging.

Overall, this is an entertaining watch if you enjoy revenge stories with romance at the center. The combination of political schemes, personal vendettas, and a couple who genuinely enjoys playing off each other makes it a fun series to follow. The pacing is quick and the story is still unfolding, but the main appeal is clearly the evolving relationship between Qingyuan and Yan Rui.

Thank you for releasig this 2026 masterpiece - Xu Kai rocks!!

Brilliant piece of work. Clearly for intelligent audience.

Its a mystery and like any good mystery its not all going to be revealed in episode one.

The story unfolds in layers gripping the viewer in the moment and evolving chemistry between the 2 leads.
Another absolute gem of a performance by Xu Kai.
He has always been a brilliant actor but of late, his performances are way above par and clearly outmatched.
The character Shen Run is explosive hot. And Kia plays him brilliantly- all hot and handsome and in control all at the same time - and by jove that's an addictive package.

This one is seriously the kind you’ll rewatch a dozen times.

For all those misinformed comments on how the tragedy and the past is not clear - it’s from the perspective two kids!
They are remembering the traumatic tragedy from their past from a child’s perspective. It’s disjointed and confusing and wrapped in pain and suffering of confused traumatised children as to them it makes no sense.
That’s why they need answers and they need revenge.
Because the tragic events seems pointless.
Rich or poor losing your parent and your entire family for no apparent reason can leave a very heavy burden.

The plot is revealed in bits and pieces. As they come to terms with the reality of what happened and they slowly discover the truth. - ----
MYy quick assessment - qingyuan’s mother was banished from her home under false accusations. She had a child, and was not dead jsut bansihed so always a risk to the entire plot and agency of a false accusation.
Shen run’s father is investigating either the xie family for curruption or quingyuan’s mother’s accusations or both.
He has to leave for further investigation and feels his eldest son is vulnerable and may be targeted so he leaves him with quingyuan’s mother for safekeeping till he returns, as no one would think of looking for his child in a poor single mother’s home.
But forces are at a play to both suppress the investigation on the xie family and to silence qinguan’s mother - two or one factions attack the two families, kills Qingyuan's mum and wipes out ShenRun’s entire clan.

As later revealed - qingyuan’s father killed her mother but blamed it on her getting attacked for harbouring rebels.

Harbouring rebels again points to Shen Run's family being targeted. His father had information or was investigating something related to either of both Xie family or the eldest wife's family Hu - supposedly very close to the emperor.
The curruption in xie family is materminded by a bigger entity - very likely the Hu family of the eldest of First Madam.
Qingyuan's father rose from the ranks - very likely beauce of his marriage to the Hu family daughter, whose father is the kingpin - the marter strategist, running the grain hoarding and blackmarketing scam across the country and qingyuan's father is part of that network by marriage. It seems Hu is the PM?
It is also possible that its the first madam that killed the fifth madam to get rid of both the fifth madam and qingyuan’s mother. Both of who she considered as her competitions.

Point to note - Their chemistry is explosive from the word go. Kai is beyond brilliant. I swear I’ll be watching reruns of just these few episodes everytime each new one is released.
And oh! - - - hold your breath for episodes 4 and 12 and 14 the guy simply burns the screen to smouldering ashes.

Crazy-Fast Pacing & Interesting Storyline... but.

Plot is super-fast paced and I actually love the lead actors. The FL's dad is such a slimeball I actually want to skip his parts because he makes me uncomfortable when watching his maneuvering, shamelessness, and vileness. We all know why the FL came back and that's to get revenge, but, honestly, I'm seeing a lot of things almost happening on their own rather than because she had a hand in them.

Another question for me is why doesn't the ML just tell the FL who he is?

There seems to be tons going on but at the same time a whole lot of nothing. It's a little mind-boggling. With all the ML's power, why is he going about things the hard way? Same for the FL. Except for her plotting to get taken back into the family (in which the ML even saw through immediately and it seems the Grandma did too...) I don't see her smarts, her plans etc coming to any sort of point? Every time she even finds/brings in evidence, someone in her family just cries "family business" and it's swept under the rug or fobbed off on whomever is convenient.

FL, I'm guessing is supposed to be "cold hearted" in this but her character is coming off as mute/blank-faced instead.

Also that banquet was a little crazy... FL did absolutely nothing and 2ML just fell at her feet? Same for the one sister and Pei guy? Really? A glance and one person is betrothed and the other is suddenly the 2ML's one and only? yipes.

IDK... maybe I'm only still watching because of ML at this point and I didn't even realize it until I started my review LOL.
Still watching the last 12 episodes though ^_^

i am HOOKED, they got me!

watching this as a big fan of Zhou Ye and been waiting forever drama of Xu Kai...and right from the go, these two have been anything but FASCINATING, i am so enjoying this and i have definetly missed this type of dark aesthetic dramas...their chemistry is soooo amazing, i literally scream over the gestures and the glances, even tho it is not yet romance yet they look at each other....

the plot is good so far, it is high paced from the start, no wasting time, and the two leads are extremely smart cunning individuals..

One scene i was absolutely captivated by was towards the end of ep 2, After Yan and Qingyuan fell into the river. The way they came back to Xie house...THE POWER WALK from both was Hot.......the exchanged glances, and the camera captured every subtle change in their expressions had me OBSESSED...The tension in that scene was INSANE----the LOOKS alone were saying EVERYTHING.

Another scene was when Qingyuan was getting beaten up by that IDIOTIC servant, and like badly beating up, and then that servant wanted to inject her with something, but THANK GODNESS to Yan Rui for coming at the right time, before she could do anything, he showed up and taught that ANT a lesson, immediately he got there, he gave a one DIRTY SLAP, omg, the rejoice that I yelled, i was beyond grateful and he picked Qingyuan up and rested her on his shoulders and ordered his assistant to also badly beat up the maid, real BADLY as well....i was so SATISFIED..it is as if he was literally conveying the viewers' feelings and emotions, prolly one of my favourite cdrama scene....

Rizz, ruthlessness & Xu Kai. I’m seated.

Being a Xu Kai fan, I’m honestly just pleased to watch him run with this level of rizz and ruthlessness. 😂

The plot has kept me hooked too. I want to know who did what, what happens next, and where this is all going. And yes, the chemistry is there.

Having watched Xu Kai in AMA, Wonderland of Love and As Beautiful As You, I’ve always felt his eyes and subtle expressions are what make him such a good actor. Eight Hundred proved his acting mettle, and with this one, I’m getting to see his range. Comedic, romantic, grey, ruthless… the man clearly has a lot more in his bones than just looking pretty on screen.

Does the show have issues? Obviously. But I find it entertaining, and that’s enough for me to stay invested.

The realism complaints also make me laugh a little. We’ve watched commoners rise through impossible social hierarchies, servants enter nobility, and people fall in love across rigid class structures, but apparently this is where we draw the realism line. 😭

The editing can be rough, sure, but I didn’t find it so bizarre that I couldn’t enjoy the show. I’ve seen plenty of questionable productions get a pass because the leads are pretty or the pairing is popular. So I’m not suddenly getting a PhD in editing over this one. 😂

People can complain all they want. But not every drama has to be either a masterpiece or garbage, and not every actor needs to be compared to prove someone else is “better.”

I’m just here watching Xu Kai serve rizz, menace and range. Let me enjoy my show in peace. 😭

For the year 2026, this drama is pretty much on par with many of the dramas that have come out this year that all follow this same kind of overly dramatic, fast paced format. It mixes revenge, political corruption, family drama, secret identities, and love. Set as a historical drama with a darker palette that boasts a stunning cast, beautiful clothes, and high stakes; this drama packs intrigue and suspense with constant forward motion but lacks the finesse needed to really make this a gem.

The two leads both give strong performances within the bounds of the script they have to work with but because the story lacks a strong enough structure their characters often feel a bit hollow. Acting from much of the rest of the cast feels cartoonish and unrealistic. Many over act and most emotional scenes lack conviction or believable emotion. From the beginning the drama moves you constantly from dramatic scene to dramatic scene with no small filler moments to allow you to feel connected to the characters, the setting, or the story. It relies heavily on the viewers suspension of belief to keep the story moving.

The female lead is strong, calculative, and calm which makes each of her takedowns for the cartoonish villains feel satisfying but her background has been given little attention and leaves many questions. What happened to her after her mother's death? How has she been able to become so formidable? Did someone help teach her everything because if she was living as a beggar or commoner where did she find the resources to learn about the law or etiquette for a noble house? The male lead is similar. If his family was annihilated when he was a child and he was on the run, how did he end up with his real identity being close to the monarch? He was a young child when everything happened. For the sake of the story and where it began I can overlook the lack of background information but then she enters the Xie household and things make less sense.

Why is everyone always in the hall seated and talking? Most major scenes in the first half of the drama seem to take place in that hall with just them talking around each other in obtuse ways. The way the supporting cast women behave is clearly over the top or suspicious and no one questions anything? The dialogue within the drama does not help with believing this is a family of such high corruption that has been able to get away with it for so long. Any normal person would have singled them out much earlier. Even if the commoners can't fight against the rich and powerful there would have been many other rich families trying to knock this family down just so they could have more power and they would have been very easily toppled with the mentality of the entire household.

There is also instances that don't make sense between the leads. Where he dresses her wounds or she lays beside him in clear view of a lot of other people but no one says anything about the normal boundaries between men and women, especially unmarried ones from powerful houses? The father and brother have been in the Northern Frontier maintaining the border but have no skills or ability to protect their home from bandits and instead send a little girl to search for help? Are there no guards or servants in this huge house? To me the most interesting character is Young Lord Li as the second male lead. His instant interest in her was not portrayed/introduced well but his character and performance are enjoyable to watch and I'll be almost sad to see him get heart broken.

Overall I think that if you have enjoyed many of the recent dramas such as The Glory, Blossoms of Power, Generation to Generation, and Ashes to Crown then I think you will find this drama enjoyable. They focus on beautiful casts and stories that move quickly from one big moment to the next. What they all lack is a certain level of believability to them because they don't take time to build their characters or settings and instead focus on constantly shocking the audience rather than creating stories that will stay with you. I don't find myself emotionally invested because the narrative never gave me time to feel that way.

Zhou Ye and Xu Kai have more chemistry than the entire periodic table!

Initially, when this drama was announced and they cast Zhou Ye and Xu Kai as the leads, I knew right away I had to watch it. So, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to read the novel, and I’ll admit, I was a bit hesitant. The novel is a bit "slow-paced" with very little focus on romance, but later on, I learned the screenwriters would be making some changes, which put my mind at ease.

Shen Run was the character who surprised me the most. Xu Kai played him masterfully, and I must admit I was charmed by his seductive yet realistic personality, which is not the least bit off-putting. As for the female lead, Qing Yuan, she is just like in the novel: a young woman seeking revenge for her late mother, yet able to hide her true intentions, executing her vengeance without any remorse. Something very realistic about Qing Yuan is the fact that she cries out of anger. In some of her dialogues with the Nanny, a single tear would roll down her face, and I felt that brought a much more realistic touch to her character.

The cinematography and sets are perfect. The supporting characters are remarkable and deliver a very solid performance.

There are still many episodes ahead, but so far, this drama has completely won me over.
