Storia troppo allungata e contenuti troppo carenti: un binomio che non funziona

Cdrama storico-fantasy che rispolvera la storia - già vista più volte - di una protagonista che si ritrova catapultata nella vicenda narrata da un romanzo/sceneggiatura di un film che in qualche modo ha a che vedere con il suo ambito professionale nel mondo moderno.
Niente di nuovo, dunque, ma non si disdegna mai un buon remake. Sottolineo, non a caso, il "buon".
Zero spunti originali, bensì tutti cliché già sperimentati all'infinito e qui riproposti anche ripetutamente. L'impressione di ascoltare un disco rotto è emersa - ahimè - probabilmente già nel corso del primo episodio: il rivedere infinite volte la stessa scena in cui la protagonista cerca di modificare il corso degli eventi, salvo poi perire in modo sciocco dopo aver superato ancora una volta quello che doveva essere l'ultimo ostacolo, si ripropone così tante volte da risultare stancante, certo mai divertente. Ripetuto tre volte, il concetto lo hanno afferrato anche i muri, non c'è davvero bisogno di continuare oltre.
Date le premesse mi chiedo anche io cosa mi abbia spinta a non abbandonarlo ma, anzi, a proseguire - con sofferenza - fino all'ultimo episodio (la velocità doppia in alcuni momenti è stata una questione di mera sopravvivenza).
Il tema del copione secondo il quale deve/dovrebbe scriversi la storia è portato avanti nel peggiore dei modi: i movimenti contrastati e forzati dalla sceneggiatura piuttosto che i continui riferimenti e le congetture/paranoie mentali di lei lo fanno diventare un elemento dalla connotazione un po' grottesca: non è divertente, non fa ridere, è soltanto fastidioso, al pari di un sassolino nella scarpa che proprio non si riesce a ignorare e che impedisce di godersi una bella passeggiata nella storia narrata.

Il romance promesso in anteprima sembra dileguarsi, non si può nemmeno parlare di love story a lenta evoluzione. C'è un lui, una lei, ma sembra che la sceneggiatura - quella finta o quella vera - non sappia davvero che farsene, dei due. Un po' come dare uno strumento musicale in mano a qualcuno che non ha la minima idea di come suonarlo.

Doveva essere un drama brillante e divertente, e non lo è stato; doveva esserci un romance coinvolgente, e non l'ho trovato; E il fantasy-epico che doveva catturare l'interesse e non lasciarlo più? Soporifero.

Al di là dei contenuti, davvero un po' scarsini, l'idea con la quale vengono proposti e portati avanti ricorre spesso a scene un po' assurde, dove certe azioni, reazioni o uscite proprio non ci stanno: non fanno ridere, non emozionano, non seguono alcuna logica. Lasciano solo una perplessità sulla quale, a un certo punto, passa anche la voglia di investigare.

Personaggi - mi riferisco ai principali, il resto è mero contorno - dalla caratterizzazione piuttosto discutibile: lui viene tratteggiato in un modo all'inizio e poi snaturato nel corso della serie fino a finire tristemente in OOC e appiattirsi al pari di uno zerbino. Lei mantiene un po' di spina dorsale, ma annoia a dismisura lo spettatore con continui sabotaggi della storia dovuti alla sua conoscenza del copione, che però falliscono immancabilmente. Non c'è la minima evoluzione del personaggio e i dialoghi basic e, nel caso di lei, a volte un po' naïf, certo non aiutano ad arricchire le due figure.

Passando al cast, buona ma non eccelsa la prova di Li Yi Tong nelle vesti della protagonista femminile: una recitazione simpatica e di carattere, la sua, ma che sembra a tratti anche incompleta. Quanto a Liu Yu Ning il discorso è diverso: ci sono attori che, a pelle, poco convincono. Per me lui è uno di questi. Gli riconosco senza dubbio del talento e capacità espressiva... Ma, ciò nonostante, continua comunque a non piacermi particolarmente, tant'è che avrei preferito piuttosto molti altri attori nei panni del ML. Gusto del tutto personale, va precisato.

Capitolo OST: nessuna canzone di particolare rilievo. In compenso l'Aria sulla Quarta Corda di Bach che si sente a un certo punto mi ha fatto pensare di essere finita non nella sceneggiatura del film - come accade alla protagonista - ma direttamente in una puntata di SuperQuark (di cui era la sigla).

Tirando le somme, mi sfugge il senso di proporre oggi un drama di questo genere, senza nulla di nuovo e dove il tanto già visto è qualitativamente discutibile. Tranquillamente evitabile.

Her strength lies in how she adapts, how she processes each new revelation, and how she makes decisions that balance survival with integrity.

From the start, Song Yi Meng is shown only the side of Nan Heng that reinforces her fear and distrust. She doesn’t get the luxury of seeing his inner turmoil the way the audience does. What she sees is threat, manipulation, and the looming shadow of a fate she’s trying to escape. And yet, she never sells out her family, friends, or even Nan Heng to protect herself. She navigates a world designed to test her, and still chooses compassion over cruelty, discernment over desperation, and love over fear.

Liu Yu Ning’s performance is powerful; he begins as a divine threat and gradually unravels into someone heartbreakingly human. His micro expressions are razor-sharp, a flicker of pain, a restrained smile, a glance that carries centuries of grief. He doesn’t overplay emotion, he lets it simmer beneath the surface, and that restraint makes every breakdown hit harder.

In action scenes, he’s magnetic. His physicality is fluid and commanding, never stiff or ornamental. Whether he’s wielding a sword or simply standing still, he looks like someone who belongs in a myth. And when he speaks? Every line is delivered with intention. He doesn’t just recite, he inhabits. His voice carries weight, his pauses are deliberate, and his emotional control makes even the quietest scenes feel charged.

Li Yi Tong

Li Yi Tong portrayal of Song Yi Meng is exceptional. The character is unpredictable, emotionally layered, and sharply funny. She had the difficult task of playing two versions of herself, one who naively falls for Nan Heng without knowing the full consequences, and another who is self-aware, burdened by knowledge of the original script, such as what happens to her, her family, and the cost of loving him. As her real feelings for Nan Heng deepen, she’s caught between foreknowledge and vulnerability, and Li Yi Tong navigates that tension with remarkable finesse.

What makes her performance even more compelling is her comedic timing. She brings a brand of humor that feels distinctly 80's 90's Hong Kong, quick, clever, and emotionally agile. Humor is notoriously hard to play, especially in a drama this emotionally charged, but she nails it. Her tonal shifts, her misdirection, her ability to pivot from satire to sincerity in a single breath, they’re masterful.

So many reviewers on this site throw shade at and rate down A Dream Within a Dream, while praising The Prisoner of Beauty with a kind of disingenuous enthusiasm.

Let's be clear, there is obviously a bias at play, one that colors their entire viewing experience. They watch ADWAD through a lens of skepticism, picking apart characters and storylines that are simply too complex for them to understand or appreciate.

TPOB is fine. It’s an average romance story with familiar emotional beats. But it doesn’t take risks. It doesn’t challenge genre. It doesn’t ask you to think about storytelling itself. A Dream Within a Dream does all of that and more. If you rate TPOB higher, that’s a matter of taste. But let’s not pretend it’s because the writing is stronger. ADWAD is simply operating on a different level.
