The story shows the lives of Chinese people in Bangkok's slum district, which seeks to preserve Chinese traditions. Mong is a pork merchant and a family man, married to a younger wife, Cheng. She doesn't love her husband, but is grateful because he helped her out of trouble by buying her from slavery in a wealthy family. Their neighbours, Uncle Kim and Jiew, are fascinated by Cheng's profound beauty and her diligence, but they keep their feelings to themselves.
