The story takes place in the isolated ancient town of Yuming, where half of the people used to sing Kunqu, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera still performed today, while the other listened. A young Japanese man arrives in town on a mission from his grandfather, and falls in love with a reclusive opera singer. The film references the oneiric love story from the famous play "The Peony Pavilion". Edit Translation
