My guess would be because of the variety of gaps between Mon and Sam:
A wage gap, socioeconomic/status gap, age gap, etc. 

It would certainly encapsulate the overarching conflict here: are Mon and Sam able to be together given how very different their statuses and places in life are? And the fact that Mon felt like she wasn't good enough for Sam.
