Kiwa is a daughter of a long-established fabric dyeing business in Kyoto and a master of wax-balloon dyeing. Her work is going well, but she is so devoted to her job that she has missed the chance of marriage. While at Nara temple for the cherry blossom, she meets a university professor named Takemura, who is wearing a tie that she dyed. Kiwa falls in love with Takemura, unaware that he has a sick wife.
