Wuxia series (lots of magic) with Zhang Ling He & Jing Tian

PLOT: The FL, a poisoner in her small, quiet sect, takes in the ML (banished Protector who has just escaped from the prison where he had been locked up for 100 years by the Great Path, a powerful & aggressive sect). The FL keeps him as a medecine tester. They are joined by the son of the Dragon Lord and 1 mischievous fox. The 4 friends will discover their past little by little and the Great Villain who manipulates the world to achieve his goal.

First off, I would like to clear some misconceptions I read here about this drama. Hopefully this might help some future watchers contemplating on whether to watch this. This drama isn't low budget at all. Its budget is similar to "Moonlight Mystique". The cinematography, cgi and sets are beautiful. Especially the whale boat island. There are no whiny characters either. Now coming to the storyline, it's really good in the first half, the episodes were engaging and no-nonsense, keeping me hooked. Even up to ep28 or something it was still good.

For the last 10 episodes, the editing became choppy and many main scenes were cut out. The storyline started going downhill, still the twists kept me going. But the FL does turn stubborn and annoying for a while. About the ending, I am not happy, neither did I like the way it was presented. Again, heavy editing and removal of some important scenes was frustrating.

All in all, you can watch it once and enjoy the first 2/3rds of the drama. I personally didn't like the ending, but that's just a personal opinion. I am not a fan of one lead killing the other for "the greater good". The only drama which managed to pull off that trope well was possibly "Love between fairy and devil". Here they could've found a way to prevent that from happening, but I feel it was lazy writing in the end.

Very watchable!

I love both Zhang Ling He and Sally Jing, so I wanted to watch this show as soon as it started airing, I even shifted from premium to VIP for the last 6 episodes. The story has the usual fight between good and evil, with good being victorious in the end, if I had to sum it up in just these many words. What I liked about the show were the interactions between the leads, which were naughty, sweet, romantic and funny. I also loved the friendship between the four main characters, the funny banter and the way they stood up for each other when things went wrong. The costumes, music and cinematography were good, and the special effects were good too. In all, it was a good series to watch, but for the unnecessary three years of separation that the leads were subject to, just to justify the curse. Apart from that, I loved the series a lot.

I liked the story. It has comedy, ill-fated love, friendship, twist-turns. One thing I loved was that there were no love triangles. 1st episode's CGI was really bad, but gradually it got better each episode. There were so many funny scenes, but it also had twists & turns. In each episode I was excited to know whether Ji Yang would be fully in control of Sen Luo or not.

Poor Ji Yang has to be Nan Yan's guinea pig.

I thought I wouldn’t like Yin Ya, but I find him so cute.

Loved how Ji Yang & Yin Ya at 1st always used to fight later on they were always helping each other.

Laughed how Mu Zhan Ting hugged Yin Ya thinking him as his father.

Laughed when Ji Yang & Yin Ya walked as ladies.

Laughed when Mu Zhan Ting jumped on Ji Yang's arm to hug him. Ji Yang asked Nan Yan how many more weird brothers she had.

Love Ji Yang, Nan Yan, Yin Ya & Mu Zhan Ting friendship.

Underwhelming

I didn’t find this drama very interesting after watching 10 episodes. The story is very underwhelming, though some may enjoy it. This one is not for me and I can’t continue it.

The Good

I watched it for the cast since they are all decent actors. This has a good line up that will definitely attract fans. The actors are also not dubbed which has been a positive to see in CDrama lately.

The Bad

It has a weak, predictable plot. This xuanhuan is definitely not a new idea. I quite enjoy xinxia’s and xuanhuan’s but there hasn’t been many good ones in recent years as most just recycle the same things and this one has done the same thing. Character arcs are cliche. They are bland and have no complexity to them. You have the peculiar girl with a bad reputation, the cold main guy who’s hiding his identity, the 2 friends, one who isn’t trustworthy and quick to betray and the other who just serves as comedic relief. The enemies are also cliche. I’m also finding this to be very boring per episode. Not much is happening in most of the episodes I’ve seen and I notice they are only filmed in 2 locations, FL’s house and market. It has an average production quality with bad sound quality. CGI isn’t that great either. Sometimes the lighting is overdone to play up romantic scenes. Also, the few times something did occur and when it seemed the story was progressing, it wasn’t that exciting due to its predictability and they seem to backtrack to nothing happening again. I also find the humor to be misplaced. There is so much dry and odd humor in here but doesn’t seem to balance well with serious moments. Wasn’t very funny either. Wasn’t feeling the constant background music in every scene. It became distracting especially when most of it didn’t fit the type of drama it is. Lastly, the acting didn’t stand out. Didn’t evoke any emotions good or bad as I watched. It was hard to connect with any of the characters.

Watch for yourself and make your own judgement. It’s watchable but not one I’d continue.

Interesting.

It was an interesting series. I liked it overall. However, the story seemed to start in pieces, I couldn't make connections to each other, and the story structure seemed messy. While wondering where to go, we found the interesting things and reasons in the last chapters. It was difficult for us. There were ebbs and flows. There were times when I wondered who was doing what and why. I watched it anyway. Because I liked the cast very much. The actors were good. The main reason I watched this story was the actors. I enjoyed watching Jing Tian, ​​especially Zhang Ling He, Darren Chen and Chan Long. Comedy elements were sprinkled excessively. In fact, sometimes the excessive and long funny movements were annoying. Everything is better in moderation. But it added beauty and humor to the series. It saved me from monotony. I liked the action scenes and of course the images.
The supporting roles were also notable, especially Hai Bing, Gao Lu, Zhen Yu. I liked everyone, but I wanted to mention these in particular. It's a good series to watch to pass the time, and I recommend it to those who haven't watched it.

I love this drama so far...

Thanks God I watched it before knowing it's rating...
I don't know why it has such a low rating despite the awesome acting,great acting skills and esp my love for Zhang ling he and the lovely OST. I understand our tastes are diff but this drama is good. I had taken a break from c-dramas but am thankful I found this one. So for anyone who is afraid of giving this drama a shot give it coz it's worth it😍and those who don't like it don't come for me in the comment section 😔😔
It's set In the era of human cultivation where there are demigods,mortal sects ....etc. The ml has good martial arts skills and the FL is a medical practitioner...there chemistry is good though some parts seems rushed. I blame it on the censorship not the actors...
So overall it's a good watch and if I change my mind I'll edit it tho' I don't think I will 💜💜

An epic original xianxia, comedic with a dark undertone, and a beautiful love story with perfect chemistry between the leads, both great actors, Totally underserving the bad reviews, which are mostly weird and unsubstantiated …

I can’t fault this xanxia, and I have watched so many I easily get bored …
The story is very original, both serious and balanced with light humorous/comedic parts
with great actors playing characters, no unnecessary secondary plot,
served by beautiful decors, very poetic outdoor sceneries, awesome special effects for the genre … and a great OST
The details are down to the choice of fabric for the actors' costumes, whose patterns and embroideries match their characters...

What a cast of great actors making a perfect team…and serving a great love story
Special mention to the amazing and very versatile female lead, Jing Tian, who was also awesome in Wonderland of Love with Xu Kai and the Legend of Zhuohua with Feng chaofeng (epic Ming Lan). Her acting is flawless.
Zhang Ling He is as usual very good at playing a very ambiguous character, very expressive with his looks and subtle expressions, a great actor.
The way they look at each other when they fall in love is really telling. Contrary to what some wrote, the chemistry is there between these two and it is absolutely heart warming and charming. I recommend watching episode 13 ;-) and in general, the way they look and smile at each other makes you believe they are actually in love

Also, I liked very much the fact that the main leads are not two pairs but 1 pair (note: people looking for skinship and great kids scenes should not watch the xianxia genre, not coded for these),
+ 2 very endearing male characters supporting the main couple …(hence the absence of useless side story to the main plot)

I really don't get the bad reviews... i suspect they didn't fully / really watch the drama

The cast deserved better.

Started watching because of curiosity, dropped it because the CGI and production as well as storywriting were really quite lacking. I understand from reading the comments that one of the producers pulled out or the like, so there were some limitations, but it being a xianxia, the low production value really pulled me out of it.

The writing was also not the best, one of the main roles who is supposed to be super powerful just suddenly dying because they went a pit before even 25 episodes in or less? That was clearly not going to stick, plus was unbelievable really (and kind of cheap, too).

I dropped this before Zhang Linghe went into dark clothes mode. No complaints about the acting, everyone was really good; but the writing and story let it down. I did not understand how the romance really came about, it seemed to happen really quickly and did not feel very well-developed to me before they were suddenly supposedly in love. This is also a personal and subjective thing, but Jing Tian is not particularly attractive to me, although I do recognise that she is pretty. While her acting is good and I find no faults on that front, her character suffers from shallow writing; which can be said for the whole cast. The cast is strong and all are veteran actors, but are let down by the writing and production not being up to par, and certainly not doing them nor the drama this could have been justice.

I cannot remember the music really so it gets my average of 7 points. I will not be rewatching this so low rewatch value as well.
