Dorje, a post-90s orphan of a fallen hero, studied at the People’s Public Security University. After graduating, he turned down a chance to stay in Beijing arranged through family connections and instead chose to return to his hometown, Barkhor Street in Lhasa, to work as an ordinary police officer. Jampa, the head of the Barkhor Street police station, worried that this “pampered kid” from the capital wouldn’t be able to handle the harsh conditions of Tibet, so he assigned Dorje to mobile patrol duty.
