Taiwan was ruled as a Japanese colony for as long as 51 years, from 1895 to 1945. Under the forced assimilation policy imposed by the government at the time, education in Taiwanese schools was carried out entirely in Japanese, producing an entire generation of Taiwanese natives who had been schooled and educated in the language.
